Everlane Is In My Ears, And In My Eyes

Everlane Ryan Long Sleeve ($30)

A few weeks ago, I posted about the glories of Everlane’s $15 t-shirt.  I’m still convinced that it’s the best t-shirt that I have ever worn.  The perfect mix of fitted and slouchy, with a soft cotton fabric that I adore.  So when the company offered to send me their long sleeve Ryan t-shirt to try, I leapt at the chance.  And I daresay, that I like it even better than my beloved v-neck t-shirt.

The material that the Ryan long sleeve tee is made from is sublime.  Sublime, I say.  It’s super soft and has a great weight to it (thick, but not too heavy).

The style of the shirt is also fantastic.  Unlike most inexpensive tees, it’s cut to hit at mid-hip, so you won’t spend the whole day pulling it back into place.  The neckline is a great mix of scoop neck and boatneck.  And while I could live without the small pocket on the front, it’s barely visible on the darker colored tees, so I just ignore it.

As for the fit, the Everlane folks clearly embrace the slouchy, slightly hipster aesthetic.  Their shirts are by no means body-hugging.  My advice on finding the right fit?  Choose your size based on your bra size.  I’m a 32C, so I buy the x-small shirt if I want it to fit close to the body and the small shirt if I want it to hang like a tunic.  Neither choice is wrong, they just give me two different looks.

Also, if you’re still hunting for silk blouses for work, I ardently endorse the Everlane silk band shirt ($80).  The quality is better than the much more expensive Joie blouses on the market and, in my opinion, as good as the Equipment shirts that everyone loves so much.  So why spend $208 for a collared, silk shirt from Equipment, when you can buy the Everlane one for less than half that?

Full Disclosure: As I mentioned, the fine people at Everlane sent me a free t-shirt after my last post ran, but I never endorse anything I don’t truly love and I rarely accept freebies.  In this case, I accepted their generosity because I had already reviewed their product after buying that t-shirt myself.

I am the proud owner of a LOT of Everlane shirts. What a great company!

One tip I would give for sizing – I find that the silk shirts run small in the arms, particularly the peter pan collar one. I have muscular arms and after a few wears the seams started to pull. Had to size up from my normal XS (I’m a 0/00) to an S.

If you haven’t tried their cashmere, you simply must. I used to be a JCrew cashmere lover, but now I will only buy Everlane. Theirs pills a lot less and has a much finer knit.

    • Heather says:

Is it a fine gauge, or a heavier, fluffier knit? I’ve been debating the tissue cashmere for years. I live in Florida, so don’t need heavy cashmere except once a year or so.

    • This is really helpful info. I’m so over the J Crew cashmere, but hadn’t thought about where else to look.

      • Christi says:

@Giggling Gourmand @Heather : I read somewhere that using very long strings of cashmere yarn helps prevent pilling and that’s what Everlane does. I don’t know that’s true; I just know I have a sweater that is a year old / worn 20+ times and it looks new, while my Jcrew cashmere looks fuzzy and has to be combed.

As for the weight, sorry to be unclear there. It’s a mid-weight sweater. I live in LA and wear when it’s 50s/60s. Definitely not featherweight; not super thick either. By “fine knit” I was trying to convey that it looks more expensive than it is.

p.s. Compared to some of the JCrew sweaters, they are (IMO) a more boyish, sweatshirt like fit. I haven’t tried the vneck yet; just crew.

I love, love, love Everlane’s basic T’s. I have them in every color they make. I have two of the Ryan tanks and I have one warning – I air dry my Ryan tanks and one needed a little ironing… didn’t read the label and the shirt totally disintegrated upon contact with the hot iron. Completely my fault, happily purchased a replacement, but just something to note for others!

  3. Amy says:

But what’s the deal with the useless little pocket? It makes them look like they come from Old Navy. Why not just make them plain?

  4. Chelsea says:

Maybe this is not terribly relevant, but the scowling, frowning, worried and bored looking models in all the Everlane pictures irk the hell out of me.

  5. Saramel says:

Everlane, if you’re listening, please make this long sleeve without the pocket. It’s the only thing stopping me from buying it in every color. I love my scoop neck and V necks. I really appreciate the recommendations, Belle!

  6. Norwegianette says:

I bought two silk band collar shirts (black and white) recently and the fabric of one started coming apart after only two wears, so I can’t say I’m impressed with the quality. After a bit of back and forth with customer service (when they say they’ll get back to you within 48 hrs that apparently only goes for the first time you contact them, if you have to follow up after to clarify something it takes ages to get an answer!) they did give me store credit so I could get a new shirt, but I’m still quite disappointed – I had high hopes for these blouses. Next time I think I’ll save up and go for Equipment.

  7. Joules says:

I really appreciate the review of an affordable item! Too many fashion bloggers focus on the ultra expensive.

Belle, do you have a referral link to share that we can use so you can get credit? If not, I will happily use someone else’s if they post it here 🙂

  9. mira says:

I’m wearing the olive collared silk shirt right now. It’s the perfect blend of slouchy and professional and the hand feel? So, so good. The price point is great – between Equipment’s and Joe Fresh’s (yes, they make silk shirts) prices.

  10. e says:

Belle- how do you wash yours? The site says “hand wash” which seems highly unlikely that I will actually do…

    • Belle says:

Gentle cycle on cold. I put the Ryan tees in my intimates bag because the sleeves can get tangled on the agitator.

      • Stella says:

Was there any shrinking? I just got the size small in the long sleeved Ryan tees and I think I’d prefer the xsmall. I don’t know if I should expect significant shrinking after washing though–which might mean sticking with the small.

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
