Happy Hour: Summer Strawberries in February

Feb 28, 2014

strawberry-galette-1-edit1

As I mentioned this morning, I’m craving summer.  There is no easier “summer” dessert than a strawberry galette.  Even if your baking skills begin and end with Betty Crocker boxed mixes, you can make this beautiful and delicious dessert.

This galette recipe from Good Life Eats contains instructions for the crust (made with yogurt), the filling and the glaze (for that bakery case sheen).  However, if the idea of making crust gives you anxiety, most grocery stores sell pre-made pie crust in the refrigerated or frozen section.

Don’t like strawberries?  Allergic?  You can substitute any cut fruit you want.  I love peach and blackberry together or blueberries with a smear of lemon custard.

J.Crew Lightweight Merino Sweater ($80)

Since it’s not warm yet, but will be (hopefully, soon), we should have a chat about lightweight sweaters.  I keep a couple of J.Crew ones in my closet to layer over dresses, skirts and blouses on chilly spring days when you need something on your arms, but it’s too warm for heavy wool.  This sweater comes in 17 colors to suit your needs.  The sweater also comes in a tunic-length crewneck version.

If v-necks are what you need, I also found this basic sweater from Lilly Pulitzer that comes in black and white.  Searching for a crewneck?  LOFT has you covered in a chic pale beige and a gorgeous ashy violet.  Cardigans more your style?  The spring cashmere cardis at Lord & Taylor are surprisingly affordable, and Limited has some lovely, wallet-friendly options as well.

Plus-size? Try this striped-Caslon sweater in lightweight cotton.  Petite?  Halogen makes a lovely lightweight cashmere sweater (also in misses size). Tall? Don’t miss Gap’s Lux Light sweater (also in misses).

Happy Hour

It’s allegedly spring. However, for every minute of sunshine, there seems to be an hour of rain and gloom. So while I’d love to wear lighter spring pieces, it’s time to bring on the layers.

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
