Belle’s Weekly Reading: February 7, 2014

Feb 7, 2014

Perhaps it’s the chilly weather and the seemingly endless winter.  Maybe it’s the fact that my work has been feeling somewhat empty lately.  Or perhaps it’s the fact that I’ve been traveling a lot.  Whatever the reason, I’ve been down the past few weeks, and I can’t seem to shake it.  When does the spring start again?

***

1) Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week began yesterday in New York.  And while the clothes speak for themselves, some of the designer names are a bit tough to pronounce.  If you need some help sounding out Schiaparelli or Vika Gazinskaya, Harper’s Bazaar has you covered.  Check out their pronunciation guide 101 and Part Deux.

2) My favorite dress, the Black Halo Jackie with 3/4 sleeves is available at Shopbop.  It’s selling out quickly (due to its fabulousness), so you should also check the selection at Saks if you have trouble finding your size.  Hopefully, its popularity will convince Black Halo to start making more sleeved dresses (hint, hint).

3) 32 nations will compete in the 2014 Winter Olympics.  Here is a catalog of the most fashionable and faux pas uniforms that they will be wearing at tonight’s Opening Ceremony.

4) I’m pretty much obsessed with these Nadri studs with black mother-of-pearl.

5) Should we stop telling single women that they’re “fabulous”?  This article asks if it’s time to stop wrapping singledom in a “feather boa” and just let unattached women be.

6) I don’t know what is more terrifying. That Piers Atkinson created these hideous headbands and hats, or that they’re sold out.

7) Gorjana is one of my favorite makers of fashion jewelry.  The designs are simple and stylish.  Right now, I’m loving this arrow cuff and this long bar necklace.  This wishbone charm necklace is also a favorite.  And if you’re looking for a Valentine’s Day gift, this “Taken” ring is a lovely option.

8) I’ve been hunting for some new workout wear.  Surprisingly enough, I ended up at Anthropologie.  I love their Pure + Good line, especially this racerback cutout tank and this peplum pullover.  And this tennis dress makes me wish that I hadn’t walked away from my racket years ago.

9) Last Christmas, I posted a gift guide featuring a Downing Street Pottery mug and lamented the lack of a Washington, D.C.-themed coffee cup.  Well, ask and you shall receive.  (Don’t miss the other city mugs.)

10) Looking for a cheap thrill?  I love the look of the new arrivals at LOFT.  This quilted puff sleeve sweater is fantastic, as is this lace-accented stripe tee.  This classic navy button down is also a great piece.

11) Brown Butter + Sea Salt Chocolate Chip Cookies.  ‘Nuff said.

12) Need a warm coat?  Like toasty warm?  Have some money to invest in future winters worth of warmth?  Then you need a Canada Goose coat.  It’s the warmest I have ever been.

13) When it was announced that Sarah Jessica Parker–the feet behind Carrie Bradshaw’s shoe-addiction–would be designing her own line of high-end heels, fashionistas everywhere jumped for joy.  But I have to say, if these photos are indicative of the entire collection, color me disappointed.

  1. Nora says:

The new loungewear line – Lou & Grey – at LOFT is also a big winner. I’m currently wearing the herringbone sweatshirt jacket and I haven’t gotten this many compliments on clothes in ages (and I’m a clothing blogger)!

  2. Jamie says:

Yea… those SJP shoes are fug. I’m disappointed.

  3. J says:

Some of the SJP shoes are trendy and cute but not worth it at that price point. She used to have a really cheap clothing line called Bitten and I still have some basic pieces like t-shirts and shorts that I bought from it 10 years ago. I was hoping this shoe line would be classic and affordable in the same vein as that clothing line so i’m pretty disappointed.

  4. Anisha says:

Totally agree on being underwhelmed by the SJP shoes—they look incredibly dated, and these styles could be purchased in a thrift shop for a LOT less. Not to mention the thrift shop equivalents would be actual Manolos, Oscars and Louboutins.

  5. Christine says:

Belle, there are 88 nations competing at the Olympics this year, which is a record for the winter games. That’s what NBC reported last night, and Wikipedia has the full list here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Nations_at_the_2014_Winter_Olympics.

  6. Shannon says:

The article about single women spoke to me (and my singleness) in a way none of the other popular articles on the topic have before. Thank you so much for sharing!

  7. Kelsey says:

I have been feeling the fog as well. Thanks for posting this.

  8. Samantha says:

Those earrings are gorgeous! Definitely on my wish list.

  9. RG says:

Those Mexican race suits have some definite flair.

  10. dancinglonghorn says:

I’m sure this is just a typo but more than 32 countries are competing in the winter Olympics. Its actually a record 88 countries competing.

  11. GoGoGo says:

I love that the Downing Street mug honors DC for its beautiful bright rowhouses, and not just the famous government buildings. I don’t know if folks outside the District know it, but our residential neighborhoods are cute and colorful as heck! High five to that artist.

    • Sarah D Woodson says:

      Thank you, GoGoGo!

And, just for the record, my company name is Downing Pottery – the mugs are 100% handmade in the US (Downing Street makes them sound UK! 🙂

      Sarah, Downing Pottery

      • GoGoGo says:

Oh, my bad! Downing Pottery it is. Great stuff Sarah! Best of luck in all your work. Hope business is treating you well. I’ll keep you in mind for some gifts coming up.

        • GoGoGo says:

(They’ll make, sadly, great going away presents for some folks for folks who are leaving for other cities for school and things.)

  12. Amy says:

I have absolutely no problem with being called fabulous!

  13. Lexi says:

the SJP shoes aren’t bad, I like the heels and think they’re wearable. Whether they’re worth the price is a different story!

  14. Jos says:

It’s a strange world when SJP’s shoe line disappoints and Cameron Diaz’s impresses!

  15. rar says:

Those SJP shoes are terrible. So dated and tacky looking!

  16. we’re gona have to talk about those SJP shoes …strappy heaven with some fake flowers attached does not look sophisticated. Payless has better style than that, what a disappointment.

    • Valerie says:

I thought about the Payless/DSW sale rack when I saw the sandals with the fake flower on them. Blerg. Not worth $300+.

  17. Rose says:

Those Ralph Lauren sweaters look like something he sells at Kohl’s. There has to be somebody better who’s American to design Olympic sportswear.

  18. Annie says:

Canada Goose coats are EVERYWHERE now which makes me hate them!
