Golden Globes 2014: It Was The Best of Times…

Jan 13, 2014

There weren’t many gowns on the carpet that excited me.  Most left me disappointed, confounded or queasy, but a few of the frocks drew a positive reaction.  So let’s all take a moment to revel in the splendor of dresses that cost more than our monthly salaries.

71st Annual Golden Globe Awards - Arrivals

Julia Louis Dreyfuss in Narciso Rodriguez

Petite ladies often have a tough time on the red carpet.  Too often, they choose gowns that wear them instead of the other way around.  But this perfectly tailored halter-style gown proves that being petite is no barrier to being fabulous.

71st Annual Golden Globe Awards - Arrivals

Kate Beckinsale in Zuhair Murad

I love the cut of the gown and the art-deco beading.  It reminds me of the Chrysler Building (in a good way).  Sadly, Kate has some of the worst Botox I’ve seen since Cameron Diaz.

71st Annual Golden Globe Awards - Arrivals

Julianna Margulies in Andrew Gn

Black dresses with metallic embellishments were all the rage at the Globes, but nobody rocked the baroque look better than Julianna.  Her frock was perfectly tailored and suited to her shape.  I also loved her styled, but undone hair.

71st Annual Golden Globe Awards - Arrivals

Margot Robbie in Gucci

If you’re a fairly unknown actress with only one serious movie under your belt, you need to make a splash in anyway that you can.  So good on Martha Robbie for diving right into the pool with this plunging neckline and thigh-high slit.  She’s guaranteed a spot on several future fashion mag covers as a result.  That should keep her in the public eye for awhile.

Cate Blanchett in Armani Prive

The front of Cate’s dress was pretty, ethereal and just fashion-forward enough.  But the back…oh, baby, the back.  Good thing she was nominated in the drama category.

71st Annual Golden Globe Awards - Arrivals

Olivia Wilde in Gucci

There were several pregnant ladies on the red carpet.  Drew Barrymore fumbled in a Valentine’s Day-inspired frock, and the usually stylish Kerry Washington drew raised eyebrows with a vest-peplum hybrid.  Looking chic with a baby bump can’t be easy, but Olivia made it look easy.  The color is sublime and the accessories are perfection.

But my favorite dress of the night was…

71st Annual Golden Globe Awards - Arrivals

Lupita Nyong’o in Ralph Lauren

The rising star from Golden Globe winner 12 Years a Slave has a real Gwyneth Paltrow meets Grace Jones thing happening.  The gown is perfectly tailored with a striking silhouette and bold color.  I also love that she kept the hair, makeup and accessories minimal.  The whole look is just stunning.

LOVE Julianna Margulies, Margot Robbie, and Lupita Nyong’o’s dresses, but Tina Fey’s burgundy v neck was also one one of my favorites. She looked stunning overall–also loved her hair–but that dress was wonderful.

  2. BBB says:

I agree with your assessments, Belle. Olivia Wilde blew the other pregnancy looks out of the water. JLD’s dress was perfect – I just think the hair was a bit too youthful for her. Lupita looked fabulous, but the dress was TOO similar to Gwyneth’s, if you ask me.

And I also agree with Liz – Tina’s burgundy v-neck was amazing. The rose one at the beginning…not so much.

  3. I loved JLD’s look- I may be biased because I think she is the best, and I am counting down until the next season of VEEP is out.

I also thought Tina Fey looked gorgeous and her choker was perfect!

  4. I thought the same thing about the drama of Cate Blanchett’s dress. It was gorgeous on her, but so fitting for her win!

Tina Fey’s dress was great. I also liked the one Tina was wearing at the beginning of the show. And Tatiana Maslany’s dress, hair and makeup were great.

I wasn’t fully in love with Wilde’s look, but she did look the best of the visibly pregnant women.

  5. Stephanie says:

I do love Julianna Margulies’ dress-so elegant!

The Range: Eyelet Tops for Summer

Airy eyelet fabrics are one of my favorite spring/summer looks. White is, of course, the traditional fabric. But white is tough to wear when you have a toddler, so let’s go with navy this summer.
