Belle’s Weekly Reading: November 22, 2013

Nov 22, 2013

d26ae3dbe261764e6fe77d7994e724b11) GoldieBlox is a company that makes toys for girls who like building things with their hands.  Their commercial hits back at the idea that girls only want to play with tea sets and dolls with a video that is as clever and funny, as it is empowering.

2) I found two absolutely fantastic faux-wrap dresses while searching for another post.  This vibrant green Michael Kors dress is sublime, and just $120.  And this bold purple Jones New York dress ($118) has a wide cinch with gold details on the sash.

3) Recovering Shopaholic provides a needed “attitude adjustment” for all the women who think that tailoring is nothing but an expensive hassle.  Her comprehensive guide to what alterations can be done, what they might cost and why they are necessary if you want to look your best, is one of the greatest blog posts I have ever read.

4) Only Valentino could make a dress that costs as much as my freshman tuition seem worth the price. Just gorgeous.

5) Refinery29 offers a tutorial on how to save money with “sneaky” little changes that help you build your nest egg.

6) I recently went on a little shopping spree at Zara, and wound up with some awesome pieces.  Here are the winners:

This black wool bustier runs small but looks amazing under a suit jacket.  This peplum button-up blouse is a dream, but you will need a tank underneath.  The printed jacquard scarf from Monday’s 10th Commandment is a must have if you love voluminous neckwear.  And this backless dress with short sleeves needed hemming, but will be perfect for understated holiday parties.

7) Ever wonder how the folks at The Onion come up with all those funny headlines?  This American Life has a look behind the scenes at the jokes that make the funny papers and the gags that fall flat.

8) After years of looking at them, I finally bought a fan brush.  And thanks to this tutorial from Bella Sugar, my blush has never looked better.

9) E. Jean, the advice columnist at Elle, answers the question, “What is the Girl Code?”

10)  I’m in search of a stylish pair of gloves. I have my eye on these elegant Tory Burch leather gloves with cable knit accents.  In the under-$50 category, these chic herringbone Ralph Lauren gloves and these touch-screen friendly quilted gloves also caught my eye.

11) And last, but by no means least, for all of the women who watched Martha Stewart cook perfect meals and create beautiful crafts and thought, “I’ll never be as good as that,” finally, some revenge.  One look at Martha’s Instagram pics and you’ll never feel bad about a fallen soufflé again.

Do you have recommendations for a great tailor in DC? My dry-cleaner alterations don’t seem to be cutting it… thanks!

  2. Lynn says:

I think I might have to get those Tory Burch gloves. I hate how she puts her name on everything, but oh my god, those gloves! Beautiful. Also, I zoomed in on the picture, and it looks like you can just snip that tacky gold nameplate off. I know you use affiliate links, so I will wait until I am not at work (we block that sort of stuff here). They will be mine. Oh yes, they will be mine.

  3. Tonya says:

I was just wondering if you or Corporette would have articles on tailoring and altering pieces. Thank you so much for that!

  4. Debbie Roes says:

Belle, Thanks so much for including my “Useful Links on Tailoring Your Clothes” article in this weekly links round-up! I’m glad you liked the article (I’m touched and humbled by your calling it one of the best blog posts you’ve ever read!) and I appreciate your sharing it with your readers. Tailoring has meant a world of difference for me and I’m always glad when others tout the importance of alterations!

  5. Rachel says:

Does anyone have a tailor recommendation in the Arlington or Falls Church area? I have tried a couple from Yelp and have been mostly unimpressed.

    • Vanessa says:

There’s a woman in the shops at Crystal City who does a good job. She’s taken in the waist of two skirts for me and altered a bridesmaid dress that was two sizes too big, so I know she’s not just good at shortening hems.

It’s allegedly spring. However, for every minute of sunshine, there seems to be an hour of rain and gloom. So while I’d love to wear lighter spring pieces, it’s time to bring on the layers.

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
