Pinterest Mondays: The Business (Casual) of Red

Oct 14, 2013

Over the next few weeks, there will be a few changes at Capitol Hill Style.  A new design.  Some new features.  A bit or reorganizing. All of these changes are designed to breathe a bit of life into the blog.  Nothing too drastic, just some sprucing up.  Because after five years, it’s time for a little reinvention.

Not Gaga-level, more like when Christina Aguilera lost the multi-colored extensions and went for the slick, platinum bob.  Anyway, you get the picture.

The first change on the horizon is that “Belle’s Weekly Favorites” is moving to Wednesdays.  In its place we will be having Pinterest Mondays, where I, your tour guide, recreate some of the most popular looks on my Pinterest page.  There will be professional outfits, business casual attire, weekend wear and even the occasional evening outfit.

Because what good are all those fabulous pins if you can’t bring some of that style into your very own closet?  Am I right?  Of course, I am (*wink*).

1. Mango Jersey Blazer ($80) // 2. J.Crew Tossed Hearts Boy Blouse ($135) // 3. J.Crew Wool Minnie Pant ($118) // 4. Michael Kors Bedford Bowling Satchel ($398) // 5. Brooks Brothers Chain Bracelet ($98) and C. Wonder Screw Stud Bangle ($48) // 6. Steve Madden Anibell Pumps ($109) // 7. Nasty Gal Remix Chain Necklace ($38)

Our first pin image comes to us from Beth at Seersucker + Saddles.  I like the modern feel of the outfit for a business casual workplace or a professional office on a day-without-meetings.  I think the key to making skinny trousers work for the office is that they need a blazer, and using it to add a pop of color is a way to be professional without being boring.

One. The star of this show is clearly the red blazer, and this Mango jacket fits the bill perfectly.  It looks great with black and white, or you can wear it with your navy pieces.  Feeling bold?  Next summer, mix it with aqua and hot pink.

Prefer a more tailored fit?  I found this Anne Klein single button jacket.  Plus-size ladies should check out this Tahari ASL jacket.

Two. Sadly, this J.Crew blouse is sold out online, though you can still find it in stores if you call.  Instead, try an ivory or white blouse with black polka dots.  This Modcloth Speckled Splendor top is worth a look, as is this polka-dot blouse from Wyatt.  Though if you prefer something without a collar, this Juicy Couture top is a great choice.

Three. Last week, we had a conversation about black skinny pants in the Ask Belle comments.  The consensus seemed to be that the White House, Black Market Perfect Form Pant and the Banana Republic ponte pants (didn’t see them online) were better than the J.Crew Minnie for holding their shape.

Four. That’s clearly the MK Bedford satchel in the photo, so I used it in the set.  Should you prefer something less expensive, try this Lulu Guinness Spot-On satchel.  Need that crossbody strap? Go for the Tignanello crossbody.

Five and Seven.  A chunky chain and a leopard-print bangle are a great way to add personality without overdosing on jewelry.  I also like the idea of wearing a multi-chain necklace under the collar to bring in some edge without looking like Mr. T.  The jewelry definitely makes a statement.  If you like your accessories a bit more subdued, you could just wear the bracelets, or you could switch out the chain necklace for one long, gold station necklace.

Six. I like the two-tone look of the shoes in the photo, but I couldn’t find an exact match.  These Steve Madden pumps are pretty close.  I also thought these Dorothy Perkins court shoes in black and cognac were a great option, or these Rachel Roy Mawa pumps.

  2. Stephanie says:

Those Steve Madden Annibel pumps are so cute! Love the height.

  3. Annie says:

As an alternative to the Annibel pumps, I suggest these Sam Edelman pumps which I own and love: https://shop.nordstrom.com/s/sam-edelman-della-pump/3488459?origin=PredictiveSearch-personalizedsort&contextualcategoryid=0&fashionColor=&resultback=800&cm_sp=personalizedsort-_-searchresults-_-1_2_B

I normally don’t wear heels that tall, but they’re quite comfortable

  4. Terri says:

When I put on my red blazer I become a more formidable version of myself. The whole concept, plus your interpretation and shopping guidance is going to get lots of use.

  5. Chloe says:

I love this idea! Do you have an open board where we can pin suggestions to, perhaps? I always want to try and recreate Pinterest looks, but can’t commit …

Not sure if everyone is having this issue but the link to the WHBM ankle pants takes me to a “professional” bermuda short.

  9. Jessica says:

6pm.com has the Anibell pumps for $72! https://www.6pm.com/steven-anibell-black-multi

Belle, you rock. Your “Weekly Favorites” post always brightens up my day and puts things into perspective for me – it will be a welcome mid-week reprieve!

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
