Ask Belle: Burgundy Handbags for Fall

Sep 24, 2013

Hi there, Belle:

Thank you for your help on this blog. I have started dressing better at work & your two ways posts – among others – have so much to do with that!

I have a burgundy bag I am looking to replace. I’ve had it for about 3 years now, and it goes with everything! I need a roomy bag for everyday wear, stylish enough to take to work, with longer handles so i can wear it on my shoulder.  Under $200 would be great.

Can you please help? Thank you! NS

A colored handbag is a great statement piece for any season.  I love bright lipstick red and bright orange handbags.  But for the fall, a more subtle color, like burgundy, would also be a good choice.

Clockwise from Upper Left: Wallis Burgundy Structured Bowler ($88) // Nali Large Shoulder Bag ($64) // Ivanka Trump Ava Satchel ($150) // Pierre Darre Large Leather Bag ($181)

Burgundy pairs well with tan, grey and navy neutrals.  It also pairs with lighter shades like winter white and ivory.  These satchels would be a great addition to any work or casual wardrobe.

One. I chose this Wallis patent because it’s a bit more striking than traditional leather.  I also appreciate the subtle details–the metal accents, the tag, the rivets.  And at under-$100, it certainly makes a statement.

Two. If you want a slouchier, more casual bag, this large shoulder bag from Asos has a great style.  The hardware, the side buckles and the pleats give this bag a unique look.  It also has silver hardware for those who have an aversion to yellow metal.

Three.  Ivanka Trump designs some really chic products.  This Ava Satchel comes in several of lovely colors.  The versatile snakeskin shade is on sale for $90.  So if you’re looking for a simple bag with clean lines, give the Ava a look.

Four. I wanted to feature one bag that had no adornments of any kind.  This bag from Yoox has a sleek shape that would work with any accessories.

Looking for other colors for fall?  This dark teal Cole Haan Linley satchel is under-$200, as is this Daniel Nicole bag with silver hardware and zipper details for under-$100.  You can also try mustard, paprika and emerald for the fall.

If you still haven’t made the jump to colored handbags, find an inexpensive one that you like and start blending it into your wardrobe.  You’ll be surprised how it can elevate an outfit.  What color handbag will you be carrying or shopping for this fall?

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
