Mossimo Collarless Ponte Blazer ($30)

When you’re just starting out in your career, your clothing budget will vary between small and nonexistent.  But, with the right styling, you can make pieces that cost under-$50 look much more expensive.

Target offers some lovely pieces that can be used to build a winter wardrobe that is perfect for work.  This blazer from Mossimo comes in a handful of colors and can be used to jazz up suit separates or worn with jeans on Friday.  I like the easy shape and the color looks really sophisticated.

This Merona crossover dress, with cap sleeves and a pleated neckline, also caught my eye.  (It also comes in plus-sizes.)  I also spotted this Mossimo dress with faux leather patches on the sleeves.  This dotted split-neck blouse from Xhilaration would look great tucked into a pencil skirt, and Target’s recent collaboration with Phillip Lim produced this chic graphic print blouse.

If jackets are what you need, this Mossimo boucle and black contrast blazer is a great buy for $40.  I also like this Mossimo cropped tweed blazer, currently on sale for $14.

I have a few pieces from Target, and the quality is similar to H&M (maybe a little better in some cases).  So if you would like a couple of pieces for fall, but don’t want to break the bank, carefully select a few inexpensive pieces that might work with what you already have in your closet.  And check back at 2:00PM for Two Ways to wear this jacket.

    That’s an attractive jacket.
If you’re buying something from a mass marketer like Target I think it’s best to stick with something that’s fairly plain. Everyone and their Mother troops through Target. If you pick something really distinctive -a flashy trim, or embellishment- they’re going to immediately recognize it and say, “she bought that at Target.”
If you go with a plain/basic/classic jacket you can keep’em guessing. You can put your thrift-store scarf or your Grandmother’s brooch on it to distinguish yourself. Then you won’t be the girl with the jacket from Target, you’ll be the girl with the good-looking outfit.
