1. Reiss Taruca Tailored Dress ($340) // 2. Barbour Beckwith Sweater ($149) // 3. Gorjana Aurora Necklace ($90) // 4. Juliana Convertible Clutch ($98) // 5. NARS Velvet Matte Pencil in Bahama ($25) and Velvet Gloss Pencil in Baroque ($25) // 6. J.Crew Double Serge Wool Pencil ($130)

One. We all know that I’m a sucker for a tailored dress, and this sculpted sheath from Reiss is no exception.  I love the pleated details on the neckline and the vibrant tomato red color (the color is listed as red, I believe the flash makes the dress look orange.

Red is a bold choice for the office.  Banana Republic is offering a similarly tailored dress in red this season.  If you like the color but want something more versatile, this long-sleeved Jones of New York ponte dress could be dressed up or down.  And plus-size ladies, should check out this lipstick red sheath from Nippon.

Two. On this chilly day, I’m mourning the end of summer.  Luckily, I have the promise of ivory cable knit to comfort me.  This Barbour for Madewell sweater is the perfect mix of texture and style.  In the under-$100 category, I like this basic knit from Land’s End and this funnel neck tunic-length sweater from DKNY.

Three.  I like long chains with delicate pendants, so this necklace from Gorjana is right up my alley.  I’ve also had my eye on this Gorjana Fatima necklace with delicate round drops.  If you’re looking for something more substantial, I like the interlocking geometric shape on this Kenneth Cole pendant.

Four. I bought this clutch on an impromptu post-lunch shopping trip two Fridays ago, and I love it.  It has a magnetic clasp to keep it closed, a rich cognac color and it’s a little bigger than you’re average clutch without being oversized.  It has just the right mix of casual and sophisticated.

Five. Since July, I’ve purchased several lip pencils trying to find a lip color that was easy and long wearing.  These NARS Velvet pencils are my favorite by far.  Bahama has a matte mauve color, and Baroque has a glossy raspberry color.  Looking for a drugstore equivalent?  The NYX lip pencil, at $5, has a similar consistency and rich pigment.

Six. I stopped into J.Crew last week just to see what they had in stock for fall.  Not a lot to get excited about, but this rich green pencil skirt came home with me.  The waist band is a little wider than that narrow BS they tried on the spring pencil skirts, and the color is to die for.  However, Halogen makes a similar shade for $69 and Anthropologie has a deep green skirt in faux leather.

I was coveting that J. Crew skirt yesterday in Reston – its on sale for $98 right now. I am regretting not picking it up but probably will this weekend.

  3. Sarah M. says:

The NARS velvet pencils are fabulous! The color lasts a long time and they aren’t drying (I put chapstick on before the pencil).

  4. Mags says:

I’d like to weigh in on the Halogen skirts. They are amazing and my go-to for work. They are fully lined and are the perfect work basic. Additionally, Nordstrom frequently has them on sale for 30 – 40% off. I have the Halogen Seamed Pencil Skirt in three colors. It’s the best!

  5. MeredithS says:

Jcrew just got a ton of new fall stuff in today. Some really cute looks. Definitely looking a lot more like fall in there now.

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.

The Find: Like a McCall’s Pattern

Ask the Editor: Vol. IV, No. Eighteen

Before we start today’s reader questions, I wanted to take a moment to talk a bit about mental health. For those who experience mental health challenges — whether occasionally or frequently — talking about our struggles is a double-edged sword.
