Two Ways: Herringbone Blazer

Nov 13, 2012

Blazer: Wool Herringbone Schoolboy Blazer ($149 + 30% off)

From Left, Earrings: Juliet Pearl Studs ($21) Ring: Madewell Gamine Ring ($50) Bag: Marc Jacobs Classic Q Francesca Bag ($538) Shoes: Kate Spade Talia ($149) Shirt: Alexander McQueen Georgette Blouse ($1,445) Pants: Ferragamo Chocolate Flannel Pants ($462)

From Right, Earrings: Athena Sapphire Drops ($113) Ring: Betty Carre Oval Ring ($55) Bag: Dooney & Bourke Large Shopper ($415) Shoes: Mark + James Elizabet Flat ($150) Shirt: Marisa Chiffon Bow Blouse ($49) Jeans: GoldSign Seville High-Rise Jean ($75)

For the Office.  Mixing shades of blue and brown is a classic cold weather combination.  It’s softer than mixing with black, and more unexpected than grey or navy.  And while I think you could pull off the look with a chocolate brown skirt and tights, the pants have a crisper, more elegant look.

I used an ivory blouse for this look instead of white because I think it’s softer.  If you’re looking for pants and a blouse that won’t break the bank, try these chocolate trousers from Express and this blouse from Piperlime, both are under-$75.

The accessories for this outfit are fairly straightforward, a pair of pointed-toe brown pumps with trousers, a slouchy slate-colored leather bag and a pair of pearl earrings.  I chose the blue ring from Madewell to coordinate with the jacket.  I think it’s lovely, but I also like the look of this lapis pendant if you want to do a necklace instead.

For the hair, I would wear it down.  Typically, with a blazer, I would say wear it up, but I think wearing it down will make the blazer and pants combination look more feminine.  For the makeup, I would select a sheer gloss and a pink blush, again to play up the femininity.  And I obsessed with brown nails for fall, so if you can get away with it, give it a try.

For Casual Friday.  I know some folks are tired of seeing burgundy everywhere this season, but even though it’s labeled as a 2012 trend, it really is a classic fall hue.  It pairs so well with the herringbone blue blazer and brings some richness to the color palette.  If you’re truly sick of burgundy, you could try a light grey blouse or or something in a jewel tone like emerald.

I chose high waist jeans because I envision this blouse being tucked into the pants.  But higher waists are not flattering on every figure, so if you’re skeptical, try a midrise.  Also, I think wider legs are better for the workplace, esp. if your Boss is particular about the dress code, but if you can get away with skinnies, be my guest.

The shoes I selected are a pointed toe navy suede, and I think they’re fantastic.  If you need something in a lower price point, these Nine West flats are under-$50.  And in case you’re new here, I almost always wear pointed toe shoes with pants because they lengthen the leg line and make you look taller.

The chocolate brown bag is a great structured tote for work.  This faux-leather shopper is a bit more casual, but it costs $35 and has a similar shape

As for the rest of the accessories, I love the blue drop earrings and the simple oval ring. If you’re looking for earrings that are under-$100, these art-deco drops are $36.

For the hair, I would wear it up.  Friday is my dry shampoo day, so I would probably tease the crown and pull it into a low bun.  For the makeup, I would wear a plum lip gloss and charcoal eyeliner.

This set is utterly gorgeous. Wow. And I love that you posted two work-friendly works, too. I will switch the jeans for navy trousers and wear the casual Friday outfit to work (where we sadly can't do jeans ever). I want to buy everything in the set. Great post.

Love these outfits! I've been looking everywhere for a tie neck blouse – the maroon is sold out and PiperLime only has the ivory in Large. Any other suggestions?

  3. Kate says:

Ack! where did the Lo & Sons post go??

  4. KateW says:

Any suggestions on what to wear underneath a cream silk blouse? My basic white camis look too casual, but every cream blouse i try on is way too sheer to go without something underneath.

  5. CH says:

@KateW – Try a seamless nude-for-you cami. I found mine at The Limited. Unlike a white tank, it disappears against your skin.

  6. m says:

@KateW – I own a few JCrew silk camisoles. They're perfect for layering under sheer items without being bulky or clingy.

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
