Well done, Sister Suffragette!

Nov 6, 2012

We’re clearly soldiers in petticoats
And dauntless crusaders for woman’s votes
Though we adore men individually
We agree that as a group they’re rather stupid!

Cast off the shackles of yesterday!
Shoulder to shoulder into the fray!
Our daughters’ daughters will adore us
And they’ll sign in grateful chorus
“Well done, Sister Suffragette!”

Today is Election Day, so if you haven’t yet cast a ballot, I would whole heartedly implore you to do so.  Women have only had the right to vote in this country since 1920–that’s not even a full century.  So even if you’re busy, even if you think you don’t have time, stand shoulder to shoulder with the thousands of women who protested, were jailed, beaten and persecuted for your right to vote.

The lyrics above are from Mary Poppins, if you’d like to hear the rest of the song, click here.

Now you've done it…gonna be singing it in the voting line! Love that part of Mary Poppins.

  2. Nina says:

And if you want to hear the story of the fight for the vote, including the protests in front of the white house, go to the Sewall-Belmont House on Constitution and 2nd NE. It's is my favorite small DC museum.

  3. Laura says:

Great link! Thanks as always for the spot-on post.

  4. Nellie says:

I love this song from Mary Poppins! Thank you for posting, Belle. Though I know I am on the different end of the political spectrum from you, I appreciate your overall approach to civic engagement on this blog. Happy election day!

  5. Sam says:

    Preach it!

  6. Jamie says:

    Well said Belle!

  7. Ann says:

It is so true. I don't know how accurate the movie is, but if you see the movie “Iron Jawed Angels” you will never miss another Election Day.

  8. Kristen says:

I had to share this one on Facebook. Such an interesting thought on election day… and a great song! Thanks, Belle!

Saw It On Social: Rooted

A few months ago, my husband killed two of my plants. I was out of town for several weeks, and while I was away, he apparently forgot that plants need water to live. So when I returned, my snake plant and my Calamondin tree were both dead, while his braided money tree continued to thrive. […]

It’s allegedly spring. However, for every minute of sunshine, there seems to be an hour of rain and gloom. So while I’d love to wear lighter spring pieces, it’s time to bring on the layers.

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
