Emmy's Red Carpet 2012: A Few Shining Stars

Sep 24, 2012

A longer-than-usual Worst Dressed list, resulted in a shorter-than-usual Best Dressed List.  But even in a quarry full of rough, there were a few diamonds.  Not enough to keep Tiffany’s in business, but a few.

You know it was slim pickings when my first choice for the Best Dressed list is 12 years old.  (facepalm)  But it’s impossible to ignore the fact that Kiernan Shipka has more taste and style in her undersized pinky finger than some Hollywood stylists could muster.  This look from Zac Posen is pretty, chic and completely appropriate for someone her age.

Claire Danes looks comfortable and chic in this canary yellow Lanvin gown.  I love the vibrant color and the modern shape.  I also like her red carpet style because she always keeps the hair and makeup elegant and minimal.

Padma Lakshmi from Bravo’s Top Chef is a beautiful woman, but she has a long history of selecting slinky gowns that don’t suit her body.  So I was extremely excited to see her wearing a dress that flatters her figure in a color that looked amazing with her skin tone.  Perhaps, she and Monique Lhuillier can make this a regular thing?

Jessica Pare is the picture of loveliness in this classic Jason Wu gown.  Unlike so many gowns on this year’s red carpet (Lena Dunham, Juilanna Marguiles), the waistband creates a flattering shape for her figure.  The white is perfect for her porcelain complexion and the hair and makeup are the perfect complement.  This is old Hollywood glam done right.

The pool of good dresses was so shallow that I had to dip into the reserves and pull from the plus-one-bench, but nominee Aaron Paul’s fiancee Lauren Parsekian looks wonderful in this burgundy Kaufman Franco gown.  And I didn’t ever think I would say this, but I love these cutouts.  The narrow slits cut into this crepe, long-sleeved gown are sultry, modern and chic.

Also, I have may-jah hair envy.  Just look at that volume.

With so many frock failures walking the red carpet, best dressed was really up for grabs at this year’s Emmy’s.  So I was incredibly surprised when I looked through the gowns and thought the look below was the evening’s best…

Comedian, author and proud bitch Tina Fey does not have a supermodel’s body, but this dress is doing ah-may-zing things for her figure.  I applaud her for abandoning her traditional black gown and choosing a deep berry color, and that neckline could not be more flattering.  The hair is great, the accessories are right on and I could not be more impressed.

  1. Octavia says:

Heidi Klum looked like she was wearing a cheap neglige from Fredricks of Hollywood.

  2. KLC says:

While I agree with all your choices in Best Dressed, I cant believe you didnt include Sofia Vergara or Nicole Kidman. I LOVED their dresses!

  3. JK says:

I totally agree– Tina Fey looks fantastic! Gorgeous dress. Gorgeous color!

  4. Anna says:

You LIKED Claire Danes?!?!?! It looked like she was going to the beach. It photographed okay on the red carpet, but on stage it looked like a big yellow blob, puffing out all over the place. Just cuz you're pregnant doesn't mean you have to wear a potato sack, even if it is a yellow silky one.

  5. Meagan says:

Loved Tina Fey's dress and make-up, though the jury is still out on the hair for me.

As for Sophia Vergara, first she's stunning, second I liked the silhouette of the back half of her dress, I wasn't wild about the cutout under the straps in the front. Oh, and I felt bad about her supposed wardrobe malfunction (even if it makes celebrities seem a little more real to me).

  6. Leanne says:

I thought Kiernan Shipka looked adorable – chic and age appropriate. She exuded charm on the red carpet. I agree, though, that overall the dresses were a disappointment. I expected much more!

  7. C says:

Why do most of these red carpet dresses look too long? A long dress should not be puddling on the floor.

  8. MBM says:

Agreed – that Claire Danes dress was horrid! Am I the only one who actually thought Leslie Mann was a knock out in Naeem Khan? Sure, the top is a little hippy-dippy but that's her style. I commend her for taking a chance! And not many people can pull off a bold yellow!

  9. Jane says:

You are coming off as more than just a bit critical. You comments are less pretty than the dresses and yes, you do have some big competition.

  10. Anna says:

Leslie Mann looked great! The top was a little hippy, but it was crisp and tailored beautifully. It was also so unique – particularly refreshing since most of the better dressed actresses were in gowns that I felt like I'd already seen before.

  11. Malin, Sweden says:

I´m surprised over the numerous dresses with one shoulders, are they still in style? I thought Heidi Klum looked Farrah Fawcett-amazing and Kerry Washington looked perfect in her simple silvergown.

  12. Ms. B says:

Best dress, very best dress for color, fit, style…Tina Fey!

  13. KP says:

Emily Van Camp in J Mendel was by far my favorite. That look was so effortless and the way the dress flowed when she walked was stunning. Not to mention the bow bracelet which was a perfect compliment to the beautiful dress. I also am shocked you picked Claire Danes…that dress was terrible. The blousy top was what killed that dress.

  14. Alycia says:

I 100% agree! Claire Danes used to annoy me, but she is really becoming a classy (and normal!) Hollywood starlet. And Aaron Paul's date made me jealous because 1. she was his date and 2. she looked all sorts of fabulous.

I thought Heidi Klum's dress was pretty, but perhaps the wrong seasons. Then again, I'm a sucker for sea foam.

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.

The Find: Like a McCall’s Pattern

When I was young, my Mother used to bring me along when she would go shopping for fabric. As a result, I spent a lot of time, killing time, flipping through pattern books. So when I spotted this dress, I was instantly transported to the pattern table at a Jo-Ann Fabrics.
