Happy Hour: Fiola & Negroni

Jul 27, 2012

One of my favorite outdoor patios is at Fiola in Penn Quarter.  On a nice day, I’m more than happy to round up a friend for appetizers and cocktails under the big yellow patio umbrellas.  One of their new cocktails, Negroni Sbagliato, is quickly becoming a favorite.

Negroni Spagliato is fairly simple, but it does require some thing that you might not have at home like sweet vermouth and Campari.  It’s very tasty and refreshing, but if you don’t like sweet cocktails, it’s not for you.

French Connection Shelby Pleated Dress (Neiman Marcus, $198)

For whatever reason, we think of sitting on a patio, drinking Negroni, I think of pleats.  I also like the color palette quite a bit.

Happy Friday. xoxo, Belle

The first time I had a Spritz in Venice (many years ago) I couldn't finish it, it was so bitter… this time around, the Spritzes were all made with Aperol. Every cafe table was covered with Aperol Spritzes. I decided to try again. Oh my. Quite good. I now have Aperol at home and fire up a Spritz once in a while. Similar to your recipe but instead of sweet vermouth, you use sparkling water and lots of ice cubes.

I imagine the vermouth does make it quite sweet, it must cut the Campari pretty well. Aperol is a gentler version of Campari. Still bitter, but not bitey.

Ugh, I don't know how people drink negroni sbagliati!! Personally I find it positively revolting (The sweet and the bitter… shudder Plus, I just feel like the taste of alcohol is so prominent in this drink), but when I lived in Italy it was pretty much the only thing my Italian friends would drink. Can you imagine having four of these over the course of an evening?

LOVE Fiola and this dress is now winging it's way to me – if you see me on the patio do stop and say hello so I can buy you a drink 😉
