Testing Your Gunmetal

Nov 10, 2010

Very rarely do I stop someone in the hallway to ask where they purchased a bag or who designed their dress.  Because, thanks to this blog, I usually know every piece from every major retailer and designer collection by sight.  After all, I spend 30 hours per week window shopping on the Interwebs.

But last night, I actually crossed the street, and headed away from my destination, to ask a woman what nail polish she was wearing.  Don’t kid yourself, she thought I was bonkers.  Because in that moment, I was like a tweenage girl following a Justin Bieber look-a-like through the streets of D.C.

The color that sent me into a flutter?  Iron Butterfly by Orly.

One look at that perfectly matte gunmetal grey shade, and I dove headlong into the kind of obsessed, compulsive behavior that earns Glenn Close an Oscar.

No wonder the color is sold out everywhere and only available on eBay.

This shade is perfect for the woman who is bored of dark purple and not emo enough for black, but still wants to shake it up from time to time.  And if Iron Butterfly isn’t calling your name, its copper-colored partner shade, Glam Rock is also calling my name.

So while I don’t recommend risking life, limb and a restraining order to style stalk a woman down 7th Street at rush hour, this shade is definitely crush-worthy.

If you like the shade but don’t partake in the eBay madness, Zoya makes a polish called Freja that is similar but shiny.  If you must have matte, Deborah Lippmann sells a Pat Benatar designed shade called “Hit Me With Your Best Shot,” which can only be described as rocker chic.

So will you be wearing gunmetal grey polish this season?

    Belle,

    love all of your posts.

if you do like the Zoya color, Essie makes a matte top coat that will tone down the shine. https://www.alllacqueredup.com/2009/08/matte-top-coats-lets-compare.html

    “style stalk”?! ingenious.

I love this, but I'm not sure if I could pull it off. Nubar Midnight is similar too.

I am a little surprised you posted about this, do you think this almost black color is inappropriate for work? Or is this just a weekend wear thing? It would be inappropriate at my office.

  9. EAC says:

Belle, this shade is available at head2toebeauty.com and victoriasnailsupply.com. If you have any nail supply stores (the places where nail salon owners shop) you'd probably be able to find it there as well.

  10. Belle says:

Allison, That depends on where you work. I wouldn't wear it to work. But there are times when we're not at work.

It’s allegedly spring. However, for every minute of sunshine, there seems to be an hour of rain and gloom. So while I’d love to wear lighter spring pieces, it’s time to bring on the layers.

The Range: Spring Blouses for Work (or Zoom)

Since Sloane was born, I’ve fallen hard into a black, white, and blue wardrobe. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but as spring blooms, I need a little color in my wardrobe (and probably a little print too). Here are a few tops that caught my eye for work.
