Fall 2010: Vintage Outerwear

Sep 28, 2010

Once upon a time, women dressed up to for work, for play and for everyday errands.  Once upon a time, every outfit included jewelry, hats, scarves, sunglasses and gloves.  And once upon a time, a chic piece of outerwear wasn’t a privilege, it was a birthright.  Fashionable women didn’t just own one coat, they owned several in different colors and styles.  Once upon a time…

This Fall, instead of buying a generic black overcoat from the mall, think about doing something radical like buying a vintage coat with a little pop.  Here are some stylish examples from my favorite online retailer, Etsy.

Lilli Ann Yarn Collar Coat ($450)

Valentino Mulberry Coat ($325)

Deadstock Trench Poncho ($60)

Mustard Wool Coat ($185)

Pale Almond Cape ($205)

Avant Garde Wool Coat ($88)

    Hi Belle,

This is my first comment on a fashion blog ever. I just wanted to say that I love love love your blog. It's a fantastic resource to those of us who work in conservative industries but want to keep/develop some flair. Thank you for all of your fantastic hard work, and for your excellent taste as well. Please know there are many of us out there who very much appreciate and look forward to each and every one of your posts! (Even if I don't agree that Crocs can't be worn to work — hahaha, just kidding!)

Take care and hope you enjoy some relaxation on your time out. Good luck also on your law school applications.

    Peace,
    Jay

Love love LOVE the mustard coat. I can't pull off yellow (I'm pretty pale with light hair) but I am seriously coveting this glorious coat!

I adore that green coat. I am a commenter that has been critical of some of your posts in the past, but by and large I don't comment when I like your posts (which is 90% of the time). So, thanks for posting some bright beautiful coats on a grey day when I'm stuck in a campaign office… it made me smile.

  6. Belle says:

Personally, I was all about the Valentino. But I also love the cape. I've had to stop myself from buying it at least twice.

    Love the coats–so cute!

Commenting here because the other comments are disabled – shame on the meanies. Your blog is a delight, and I hope you keep doing what you're doing. Also, I will take one pale almond cape to go.

  9. SC says:

I'd buy the Valentino Mulberry coat in a heartbeat if I wasn't a broke college student.

  10. Jill says:

So pretty. Thrift shops in cold climates are good places to look for vintage coats, too. Have found a few good ones visiting my family in Buffalo.

  12. The mustard coat is so fabulous! And thank you for the post. When everyone says “Camel is back for Fall!” I instantly fall asleep. Yes, it's classic. It's also boring. Color, people!!! I just finished a purple fuschia (as opposed to pink fuschia) jacket, and have a kelly green one planned.

A few months ago, my husband killed two of my plants. I was out of town for several weeks, and while I was away, he apparently forgot that plants need water to live. So when I returned, my snake plant and my Calamondin tree were both dead, while his braided money tree continued to thrive. […]

It’s allegedly spring. However, for every minute of sunshine, there seems to be an hour of rain and gloom. So while I’d love to wear lighter spring pieces, it’s time to bring on the layers.

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
