Fall 2010: Sweater Logic

Sep 27, 2010

When the weather turns chilly (which, I am promised is happening any day now), women rush to the stores to purchase Fall clothes.  And no item epitomizes are desire for warmth and comfort like sweaters.

Unfortunately, most of the sweaters available in the retail market are capital B, Boring.  Crewnecks, V-necks, turtlenecks, and cardigans…whoop tee doo.  The bottom line is that unless you just moved here from the Tropics, you should have enough basic sweaters in your wardrobe.  Thus, it’s time to buy some sweaters with pop.  Here are some styles to consider.

The Slouchy Sweater

Dolman Sleeved Sweater (BCBG, $148)

Effortless chic can be yours if you own a slouch sweater.  Pair this piece with denim and a long necklace for Sunday brunch, or with a relaxed trouser and colored high heels for work.  The shape just says, “This looks good? Really?  I just threw it on.”

Sequins and Shine

Michael Kors Sequin Sweater (Nordstrom, $99.50)

Sheer and Textured Knits

Lutz & Patmos Sheer Sweater (The Outnet, $130)

Sheer has been a really big trend over the last few seasons and now, you can incorporate it into a knit.  Wear it on its own in the early Fall and then wear it over a white pointed collar shirt when Winter comes.

DvF Edwardian Wrap (ShopBop, $325)

While this dress may be a little drafty for those of you in the colder climates, I think that it’s impossibly chic and effortlessly feminine.  This is the kind of dress that you throw on when you don’t know what to wear and it looks perfect every time.  I also love that it’s navy instead of black.

Drama in the Back

Kain Open Back Sweater (Revolve, $118)

Set aside for a moment the fact that this model needs to be held down and force fed lard (I’m surprised her shoulder blades don’t cut through the fabric), open back sweaters add a little unexpected drama to your wardrobe. The same is true for off the shoulder sweaters and deep cowl sweaters.

If none of these styles appeals to you, you should look for sweaters in bright colors, sweaters with metal, ribbon and zipper details and sweaters with prints or patterns.  But whatever you decide to buy, please resist the temptation to stock up on boring crewneck cashmere pullovers and call it a day.  The cold weather months are dreary and boring enough, don’t you think?

I'm so glad you posted the sequins sweater! I have a sequins cardigan that I adore but haven't worn because I'm not entirely sure it's appropriate/modern/fashionable. And yet, I can't bear to part with it. I'm definitely going to be wearing it now, thank you for giving me the confidence to wear it again!

“Set aside for a moment the fact that this model needs to be held down and force fed lard (I'm surprised her shoulder blades don't cut through the fabric).” If she was overweight, would you say she needed to have her fridge chained shut so she'll stop eating? I really love your blog, but the body snarking on girl's with other body that aren't yours is kinda upsetting.

    Beautiful sweater picks though.

  4. G says:

i loved the lard comment. models like that girl are frighteningly skinny. plus it was just funny.
    keep it up belle!

  5. whoa says:

To G- Well, I'd imagine that girls who have struggled with an eating disorder who read Belle's blog found it pretty unkind and not funny. It was an unnecessary remark.

  6. Anon says:

I'm showing my dorkiness here, but I recognized that model from MTV's The City. Yes, she has a different body type than most of us (ie, tall and thin). But she is not THAT thin naturally; she does not eat.

If we are going to say that snarky comments regarding anything that hurts someone's feelings are off limits, then blogs are going to get very boring very fast.

    Love the sweaters! Great picks!

  7. Belle says:

This blog is snarky. If you're feelings are genuinely hurt, then I apologize. But feel free to read elsewhere if you are going to take every word written on this site as an attack.

In the last three months I have been accused of picking on overweight girls, skinny girls, girls with large breasts, girls with small breasts and girls with curly hair (via Twitter). Who does that leave?

I think people who are sensitive about an issue tend to read the things I write and say, “Belle is picking on me,” when really these comments are never meant to be incendiary.

The model in the photo is very, very skinny. In a back baring sweater, you can see the bones poking out of her body. I don't think that's healthy, or a good example to be setting for young girls. That is one of the ways that they end up with eating disorders.

Two of my cousins are naturally bone thin so I know that it's possible, but usually, it's not natural. I did pageants amd cheerleading and lived in an all girls dorm, so I get a little terrified when people's bones stick out from underneath their clothing.

  8. a says:

    team belle.

  9. snarky too says:

team belle learning some grammar skillz if she's going to have a blog.

you're/your is a common error made around these parts…

  10. Belle says:

Oh well. You're welcome to read another blog whose author has better grammar. Or perhaps you can start your own. I have a full-time job, a part-time job and a three-post-per-day blog to maintain.

You want perfect grammar? Find someone with time for perfection.

  11. Melissa says:

Must everything be taken so seriously?

I LOVE the slouchy sweater. I need one of those… chic, fashionable and oh-so-comfortable.

  12. Andrea says:

I'm in love with the sequin sweater. This was a great post, seeing that I am at this phase right now. I unearthed all of my sweaters this weekend and discovered that they are all BLAH.

Also, snarky comments cannot be off-limits, or this blog would be capital B, Boring.

  13. AT says:

need that Michael Kors sweater. I bet I could DIY and make that. Although $99.50 isn't completely out of my budget effective pay day on Thursday 🙂

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
