Belle's Fall Five: Clothing

Aug 26, 2010

This Fall there are plenty of trends to delight the fashionista inside of you.  If you like animal prints, military jackets, suede fringe, over-the-knee boots, printed batik scarves, or faux fur then this is your year.  However, if you’re like me and you don’t particularly care for any of these trends, there are still a few fashion forward Fall staples to choose from.

Camel Coat

Martin Grant Belted Camel Coat (Saks, $2,025)

I LOVE this coat.  I love the deconstructed shape, the belt, and the warm camel color.  But since I need to spend my monthly salary on things like food and shelter, buying it is out of the question.

Luckily, Etsy’s vintage section has a variety of camel coats in stock in a Staffer friendly price point.  And isn’t being able to say, “Oh, it’s vintage,” when someone asks where you bought your coat just a bit more awesome than saying, “Saks?”

I think so.

Chunky Knits

Free People Poofs Cardi (Shopbop, $108)

As longtime readers know, I almost never wear pants.  I just simply don’t like them.  But something about this chunky, marled cardigan makes me want to throw on a pair of jeans, curl up in front of a fireplace and read a book.  Perhaps an article of clothing can alter your personality just slightly.

 Yellow, Mustard and Chartreuse

Learning Curve Dress (Anthropologie, $248)

Whether you’re layering a yellow sundress under a cardigan or wearing a chartreuse blouse with chocolate brown slacks, shades of yellow, mustard and chartreuse are big this season.  I would pair this dress with emerald green pumps and a yellow belt.  And since the shape of the dress is very 1960s glam, you actually satisfy the Mad Men-inspired trend as well.

 Lace Blouses

Marc by Marc Jacobs Bronte Blouse (Nordstrom, $398)

The Bohemian trend is very big this season but since I am decidedly not boho, I am mixing it into my wardrobe the only way that I know how, with lace.  I love this high neck, full lace blouse from Marc Jacobs for all of it’s Elizabethan glory.  However, since the price tag might burn my retinas if I stare for too long, I recommend this long sleeved lace tee from free people at one-seventh the price.

Draped Skirts

Voulez Skirt (French Connection, $168)

Draped skirts can be problematic if you are pear shaped like me.  This means that, like jeans, you will need to try on dozens before you find one that works for you.  But once you find the right one, the compliments will roll in like a storm.  It’s the perfect day-to-night piece.

The Range: Eyelet Tops for Summer

Airy eyelet fabrics are one of my favorite spring/summer looks. White is, of course, the traditional fabric. But white is tough to wear when you have a toddler, so let’s go with navy this summer.
