Faux Pas: Ombre Hair

Aug 26, 2010

Each Fall, women rush to their neighborhood salon to dye their Summer highlights away.  The lighter shade is fun while the mercury is high, but by October, it starts to look like you’re trying too hard.

This year, fashion magazines are encouraging women to skip their Fall dye jobs and allow their hair to grow into an ombre shade.  While Rachel Bilson hair looks positively beachy, this shade is not the low maintenance hairstyle that the magazines make it out to be.  In fact, if you don’t take care of your ombre locks you’ll wind up looking something like this…

Where I come from, these are called roots.  And roots are bad.

So unless you have a really good colorist on standby, I suggest you resist the impulse to try the ombre hairstyle.  Or else you’ll just wind up looking like you missed a few (dozen) hair appointments.

Belle, you're usually spot on– but I disagree! I actually heard about this trend last June and thought it would be interesting to see it play out. I have been doing it too, but I keep my face framed in proper highlights. I actually love it!

I love this look though I do think it takes a lot of maintenance. I love Drew's and Lauren Conrad's ombre locks.

  3. R says:

I just want to grab a pair of scissors and cut a few inches off of their ends! I think it makes their hair look damaged and dried out.

    I'm with R.

I think both look terrible. I have NEVER understood the fascination with Rachel Bilson. Terrible hair, and usually… terrible clothes.

  6. I think I looked like that until my haircut last weekend…but mostly because I stopped highlighting my hair when I found out I was pregnant. The accidental ombre…soon to sweep the nation.

A & R are spot on. Rachel Bilson is so blaaaah, and ombre anything is not for me.
