31 Bloggers, 1 Little Black Dress

Aug 12, 2010

A few weeks ago, I was invited to participate in “The Little Black Dress Tours America.”  The event, hosted by Society Stylist, asked 31 bloggers to style a basic black dress to suit their own sense of style.

The dress in question was a shirred shirtdress from Ann Taylor (if you like the dress you can save 20% on it here).  I thought the dress was really cute on its own, but styling it proved to be a bit of a challenge.  But I was happy with the final product, even if we had to employ some strategic Blackberry placement to protect my secret identity.

As for my favorite look so far, I love how Lilliana from Cheap Chica styled her dress.  My original idea included a ruffle vest from J. Crew, but the dress wasn’t available.  And thank goodness, because Lilliana’s vest look was so cute, I’m not sure I would have been able to compete!

If you’d like to see how I styled the little black dress, head over to the Society Stylist to see all the looks from the past 12 days.

For being a participant in The Little Black Dress, I received the Ann Taylor dress free of charge.  However, I was not compensated with a monetary payment.  But a free dress is a free dress right?

I have this dress and it is VERY flattering. Would definitely recommend.

  2. Allison says:

Belle, love the way you styled the dress. Perfectly work-appropriate for working in DC, but also cute enough to wear out for dinner/drinks with friends after work. My second favorite styling was Jennifer's version, from Chasing Louboutin. https://www.societystylist.com/?p=4725#more-4725

Love your styling! So simple and creative.

  4. Dr. Jean Grey says:

The styling looks cute on Belle, but I'm pretty sure the dudes in my office would think I was a crazy lady for wearing two dresses.

  5. Katherine says:

I would have never thought of the dress layering idea but it works! I didn't like how some of the other bloggers basically just covered up the top half of the dress. That seems to defeat the point as they might as well have just been wearing a black skirt.

  6. Jaime says:

Great job Belle! You definitely get top marks for the challenge. The other submissions didn't seem to embrace the dress in the way you did. Cool pic too….

  7. L says:

I do like this look — I do. But how realistic is it to layer dresses? I mean, don't you start adding a lot of bulk very quickly? Or spend all day adjusting and readjusting to keep the look together?

  8. Jessica says:

    That dress is gorgeous!
and with all those different styling ideas, even more reason to buy it. restraint, restraint….

I agree, belle's idea is really fun and different. I also like the San Francisco one.

  9. Lilliana says:

You look so cute!! LOVE your styling idea! Thanks for the shoutout! 🙂

Belle's style is by far my favorite!

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
