Intern Post: I'm All Ears

Aug 9, 2010

Having just graduated college and lacking a full-time job – or any job that pays even a dime, for that matter – my shopping budget is limited, to say the least. I can easily sit here and day dream about sumptuous clothing all day, but it’s not anywhere near my reality. Having done my best to collect a small group of season-less classics, I now rely primarily on accessories in the workplace.

So far this summer, my co-workers have witnessed an incredibly small selection of clothing adorning my bod day in and day out; theoretically, my creative use of jewelry has tricked them into seeing much more.

I try to use statement necklaces as often as possible, because they’re big and fun and so interesting that most people won’t notice that it’s the same navy sheath dress I wore two days before. Luckily for me, a select group of female family member have knowingly passed down or gifted me a beautiful collection of these pieces. Unfortunately for many, however, a funky tangle of golden swirls to distract from a boring wardrobe may clash with a conservative office dress code.

I’m thinking specifically of some of my poor* friends slaving away for 16+ hours a day in the bowels of various financial firms, committed for the rest of eternity to charcoal suits with personality-less white button-up blouses. And I offer to them an interesting twist on the classic stud.

Of course you could choose to wear the same (insert stone) studs every day, but we all want to show off our fierce style every now and then and the basics just won’t cut it. Instead, we crave something a bit more.

I’ve selected three looks from Topshop that offer just that. These earrings don’t dangle around or jingle when you walk, and they certainly aren’t large enough to be noticed from across the boardroom, allowing you to maintain the conservative manner of the office. They do, however, offer a way to personalize that same boring ensemble in a relatively wallet-friendly way.

Bead Frame Studs (Topshop, $15)

Star Stone Studs (Topshop, $25)

Pearl and Net Studs (Topshop, $25)

  2. Louisianna says:

Those are cute! I really like studs for work. Can you please share the links with us?

  3. Stephanie says:

Love that last pair (and yes, links would be great)!! In a similar vein, I’ve been considering a pair of these from Etsy:

I don’t have a conservative office environment to think about–I just like the vintage-y, kitsch-y feel of those earrings.

  4. J Bird says:

Great new post! You’re targeting a specific demographic within Belle’s audience – well done. Product name/Store/Price/Link a la Belle’s posts would be the perfect finishing touch!

  5. Jessica says:

those are so cute! And good call on the jewelry as a cheaper way to spice up an outfit.

A general comment for Belle: Do you think there’s a way to visually set off Alison’s and JC’s posts? Maybe even just say the author name at the beginning? I think it’s fun to know right away whose post I’m reading.

  6. D says:

Yes, I agree with Jessica….could you designate the top of the post if it is an intern writing? I know it’s posted at the bottom, but I like to know right off the bat!

  7. Melissa says:

Love the first and last pairs, and love the prices. I was actually JUST thinking about this the other day, since I wear my pearl studs every day and they just get boring, but dangly earrings aren’t really my thing.

    Thanks!

  9. Allie says:

Those are really cute earrings! I especially love the first pair.

  10. Chelsea G. says:

I also love the first pair!

  11. Lucy says:

Why do people need to know if it is an intern post at the beginning? Will you judge it differently? Why not read it and form an opinion outside of the author?

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
