The Apple of My Eye

Jun 30, 2010

Earlier this week, Makeda at The Glamazon Diaries wrote of her love for the online retailer/brand Shabby Apple and their Parisian Chic Collection.  I immediately fell in love with their simple, lovely, inexpensive pieces and I just could not wait until Friday’s Weekly Reading to share them with all of you.  And if my Platinum Visa wasn’t frozen in a brick of ice, wrapped in tin foil and labeled with the words, “To Covet is a Sin” written on it (just kidding), I would have purchased one of everything.  Or at least, one of the following pieces.

Also, even though Miss M is busy with her wedding plans, her rented space in my head would like me to tell you that these dresses are “Girl Cute.”  Meaning that other chicks will really dig them, and men will think their nice, but if you’re looking for WOW Factor on a date where you shaved your legs higher than the knee (you know what I’m talking about), you might want to wear something a little less lovely and a little more sexy.  And that concludes this public service announcement brought to you by the letter L for Lucky, Lover and Lingerie.  Moving on…

Cerulean Dress ($72)

Breezy, work appropriate and in Belle’s all-time favorite color.  Perfect for those Mondays when you need to look pulled together but you’d rather wear your PJs to work.

Sutherland Point Suit ($58)

Remember what I said about “Girl Cute?” One piece, vintagey swimwear is girl cute.  But since I don’t have a man to impress, I can wear what I want.  And I want to channel a 1940s pinup girl.

Black V.P. Dress ($92)

This dress is perfect in it’s simplicity.  You can go totally basic and it will look lovely, but that’s not much fun.  So I suggest a statement necklace, a wide belt, chunky bracelets, colored pumps and a bow neck blouse underneath.  Not all at the same time, of course.

Relaxation Wedge Sandal ($79)

How perfect are these shoes?  Warm, neutral color.  Slight wedge for the vertically challenged.  Ankle straps for a light, modern gladiator feel.  Yes, you do need these.

What? I knew you were thinking it.  The ESP came with the MacBook.  Or at least that’s what the guy at the Genius Bar told me.

Yellow Cotton Lawn Dress ($88)

I love this dress.  Hell, I even like the cloche and the pumps even though I usually loathe yellow and black together.  And that tiered, asymmetrical detail on the bodice…just adorable.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have an ice block to chip through.  My Visa must be freed from its chilly cage, so that this sunny dress can be mine.  And, oh yes, it will be mine.

These are so cute, but I agree with Anna–there is no way I could wear these without massive hemming. 5’4 and under need not apply.

I love Shabby Apple, but you do have to watch for the quality. They’re pretty cheap dresses so watch for wrinkling and hemming. I bought one for my sister’s wedding and a long one for a special event. If you’re careful on the ones you buy and don’t mind taking it to a tailor, they can be great.

I want ALL of these pieces!

  6. K says:

Shabby Apple is a store created by mormon women in Salt Lake City who couldn’t find good looking pieces of clothing that would cover enough skin. That’s why it’s clearly girl cute and not anything that would inspire a man to knock uglies with you. 😉 Unless it’s your husband and you are attempting to procreate.

  7. Belle says:

I didn’t venture to deep into the site, but that explains it. Well at least they’re trying to be stylish. Because just the thought of Chloe Sevignyv and her wardrobe on Big Love makes my head hurt.

  8. Melissa says:

I actually bought several dresses from them a little over a week ago… I wish I could say they were incredible, but they are all going back. I was so disappointed (it’s been a week and I’m still disappointed) but the necklines were unflattering and the skirts were far shorter and poofier than I’d expected (though this may be because I’m freakishly tall).

I’d love something like this that came in drapier fabrics and tall sizes, though. They look adorable on the models.

  9. Anna says:

I’ve browsed this site a few times before – the dresses seem very classic/simple & perfect for work. But you’re right… I definitely wouldn’t wear them to date night.

  10. Anna says:

Oh – and I’d hem everything to slightly above the knee. I’m too short for knee-length & longer styles.

  11. Norwegianette says:

The only thing that worries me is that all the pictures with models on location are so beautifully styled, but then when you see the straight up and down pictures they have for some of the dresses it’s kind of like meh and they don’t look like they fit that well… I feel like I’d be setting myself up for disappointment ordering a dress from there; let’s face it, I will never be as adorable as their models (The makeup! The sets! The hair! Seriously, the hair!).

  14. Dr. Jean Grey says:

Shabby Apple dresses have great style, but the fabric is cheap and terribly wrinkle prone. Do not buy unless you have some professional pressing skills or don’t mind paying for one after every wear. Also, I couldn’t fit my arms into the armholes on one of the two dresses I ordered, which said on the website was “sized generously.” I don’t have large arms. I’m about 5’10 and weight 135. I took it to a tailor to have it adjusted, but she couldn’t do it. She took it out as much as she could and I still couldn’t get my arms to squeeze through it. I emailed with SA customer service and they agreed to let me return the dress. That was nice, although I was still out all the money on the tailor and the shipping back. (About $25 bucks plus all my time and effort.) Needless to say, I won’t be shopping there again.

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
