How to Week: Easy(ish) Smokey Eyes

May 18, 2010

I like to keep my eyeshadow choices rather muted since smokey eyes (even professionally applied ones) make me look like a heroin addict who just cried her way through The Notebook.  But since “How to do a smokey eye” was the most popular question asked by my lovely and gracious readers, I decided to oblige despite my personal feelings on the matter.

YouTube really is a miracle in bandwidth.  You can learn how to do anything if only you’re willing to search.  After watching a few dozen videos, I have decided that the video below is the best.  Perhaps a little more in depth than some of the easier, two-step videos, but it gives the nicest eye and is simple enough for anyone to master.

The Tools

He outlines the products and brushes you’ll need in the video, but these are my favorite brands.

Too Faced Shadow Insurance (Sephora, $17)

If you’re going for a smokey eye, you want to prevent smudging, creasing and flaking.  Unless of course, you want to look like one of The Incredibles.

Stila Kajal Eyeliner (Sephora, $18)

Kajal is the best pencil eyeliner on the market.  How do I know?  It’s what Kim Kardashian uses.  And while the girl may have a serious case of famewhore-itis, she also has the best eye makeup in the business.

DuWop Gray Eyes (Sephora, $32)

The makeup artist in the video uses greys and black.  But…

DuWop Smoke Eye shadow Duo (Sephora, $28)

I prefer purple because (as I mentioned above) it’s more versatile and isn’t too overpowering for the stuffed shirt D.C. crowd.  DuWop shadows have great coverage, blend well and it come with a mini smudge brush and a mini eyeliner brush.

I was kind of turned off by the gum chewing as well, but what can you do.

Cool video – the technique is different than any I’ve seen before. I love smoky eyes but never can pull them off because my under-eye circles are so prominent, even with concealer, so I end up looking like I was punched in the face.

The model is chewing gum throughout the video and it MAKES ME WANT TO SLAP HER.

  5. ~M says:

The gum was annoying, but I almost couldn’t watch because it looked like he was going to rip her eyelids off/stab her eyeballs.

    The final look is gorgeous!

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.

The Find: Like a McCall’s Pattern

Ask the Editor: Vol. IV, No. Eighteen

Before we start today’s reader questions, I wanted to take a moment to talk a bit about mental health. For those who experience mental health challenges — whether occasionally or frequently — talking about our struggles is a double-edged sword.
