Payless Delivers for the Style Rich, Cash Poor

May 7, 2010

My Mom is Southern, so growing up, we had three kinds of clothes: church clothes, school clothes and play clothes.  This was a radical departure from the rest of my friends who just had clothes and a church dress.  And unlike the other children, we also had two kinds of shoes: shoes and “junkers.”

Junkers were the inexpensive shoes that were worn when playing in the mud, painting the house, cleaning horse stalls and rafting on the river. Basically, they were shoes that could be destroyed without fear of reprisal for ruining our clothes.  Most of my junker shoes came from Payless or were worn out regular shoes, but after looking at the website last night, Payless shoes have come along way from the junkers that I used to wear when we gardened.

Alice + Olivia Jazz Oxfords (Payless, $30)

Not so very long ago, I featured some Oxford shoes in the 10th Commandment, and some of you were not feeling the 1920s Rewind.  But I think these flats are a trendy and cute alternative to the tradition summer shoes.  I think the blush colored shoes would be really cute with charcoal grey laces and a grey skirt.

Lela Rose Bow Flat (Payless, $30)

Lime and chartreuse are hot this summer.  If you want a dash of citrus without looking like a neon sign, try these adorable Lela Rose flats.  They would look great with a navy dress or skinny jeans.  Why not have a pop of color that really pops?

Christian Siriano Slim Sandal (Payless, $30)

Project Runway fans know that these soft metallic sandals are fierce! (I couldn’t resist.)  They’re delicate design and neutral tone make them the perfect go anywhere, wear with anything sandal.  I may swing by Metro Center and pick up a pair on my way home.

Love the Oxfords. I saw these gorgeous, round-toe pumps by Lela Rose for Payless but they never materialized on the Web site, woe is me.

Plenty of shoe posts at https:bitcheswhobrunch.com

Thanks for being a wealth of information, Belle!

I do love me some Payless for trendy shoes that I expect to wear only occasionally or for only for a season or two. However, I don’t buy their shoes online because often the fit and/or quality is just too awful even to warrant $25. For example, I feel like the shape of those Oxfords is a bit off; the shape of the toe looks stumpy, and from the side they are shaped like nurse sneakers. Maybe they look better on a foot, but I am skeptical. The other two pairs pictured here look darling, but I am going to try them on in-store before taking the plunge.

  3. I love the black & white Oxfords. I believe we used to call them “saddle shoes”? I WANT!

This is one of my favorite fashion secrets…I shop there all the time and every time I wear a pair from there without fail I get tons of comments on my shoes! It is just one of those places where you have to be smart and not buy the stupid trashy stuff…Their best season is the summer, so many great choices.

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
