White House Correspondents Dinner Fashions: Part I

May 3, 2010

The White House Correspondents Dinner is often described as nerd prom.  Perhaps that was true once upon a time, but when the event brings in Academy Award winners, pro athletes, teen sensations and A-list celebrities, the proportion of “nerds” to “cool kids” drops precipitously.  But no matter who’s attending, prom is all about looking your best and showing off your formal wear.

Let’s start with the Prom Queen.  The First Lady wore hot new designer Prabal Gurung with some very pricey baubles from Bochic and Sutra jewels

This dress did an excellent job of giving the first lady a more hour glass figure and de-emphasizing her broad shoulders.  The bangles and ring were modern choices, but I’m a big believer that if the bracelets go on the left hand, the ring goes on the right hand.  What can I say? I like balance.

As for the hairstyle, I’m not crazy about it.  I would have liked it better if she had worn a soft updo.

The Jonas Brothers were there with their wives and girlfriends.  But is it just me, or do these five look like they’re auditioning for the cast of Jersey Shore?  Seriously kids, step away from the self-tanner.

Love the color.  Hate the shoes.  The dress needs to be one size bigger. Jessica Simpson looks like she’s wearing a sausage casing, and she looked increasingly uncomfortable as the night wore on.

I love Anna Kendrick’s dress, but seriously, this chick needs a new hairstyle.  If I see her stroll down the carpet in one more tendriled up-do, I’m going to cry.

Kristin Davis was there to promote Sex and the City 2.  Her dress was reminiscent of the lovely Grace Kelly, however, her behavior wasn’t.  Rumor has it the actress was turning down photos with fans and even some journos got snubbed.  Maybe she was hungry amd desperate to get inside?

My first thought when I saw Michelle Pfeiffer’s dress was, “Little Bo Peep has lost her sheep, and can’t go search for them in Louboutin’s.”  Seriously, all she needs is a staff and a bonnet.

Padma Lakshmi is a gorgeous woman, but she is in desperate need of Rachel Zoe.  The dress is too tight and too short, and the white shoes make me want to cry.  And don’t even get me started on the placement of that bracelet.

Julianna Margulies was all smiles at the after party.  Then again, who wouldn’t be wearing such a pretty dress?

Scarlett Johannsen was in head-to-toe Prada for the prom.  I love the color of the dress, the hair and the makeup.  But the shoes, I just don’t know about I feel about the summer bootie.

Pleas Lord, let me look like Mariska Hargitay when I’m 46.  Yes, that’s right, 46.  Oh, and if you could drop her one-shoulder gown into my closet for good measure, that’d be great.

So who were your WHCD hits and misses?  There certainly was enough good and bad fashion to go around.

Is it me, or is anyone else a bit wierded out that Donatella Versace was invited to this as well. Since when did this dinner turn into a publicity stunt??

My first thought when i saw Michelle’s outfit was the same thing about balance with her bracelets and rings!

and Matthew Morrison(the guy from Glee) graced the Capitol with her presence on Friday afternoon 🙂

Love the pics from the event!! I agree with you on the balance aspect desired with the First Lady’s jewelry. She always looks fantastic, but I also wish she had a soft updo rather than sporting her regular sleek bob. The Jonas Brothers and their counterparts do look like they crossed the fine line between “summer glow” and “faux pas tan.” 😛 WHYYY does Jessica Simpson always manage to turn something adorable into something that looks horrendous? I just don’t get it. She always has that strange “packed-in bosom” look from wearing sizes that are too small. It makes me so angry that her clothing/shoe line is spot-on a lot of the time, but all of it is for naught… because she sheds a bad light on it all by stepping out in public with all of her mishaps. She needs a new stylist. Ditto on Anna Kendrick’s hair… there is such a thing as TOO much of a good thing. Disappointed in Kristin Davis based on what you wrote… she looks lovely though. Hearty “WTFs” go to Michelle Pfeiffer and Padma Lahkshmi. Padma looks preggers in that ill-fitting dress. Double “ughs” on her nasty shoes. However, you indeed saved the best for last… because Julianna, Scarlett, and Mariska looked AWESOME. I loved their ensembles head-to-toe!! 🙂

The Find: An Affordable Work Dress

This winter was particularly hard on my psyche, on my self-esteem, and on my waistline. As we move into spring, I need to make a plan for how I am going to dress this additional weight over the months of work that it will likely take to shed it. So I was so glad to […]
