Spring 2010: Trendy Beauty Buys

Mar 11, 2010

Each spring, I like to update my makeup wardrobe.  It’s an inexpensive and fun way to keep up with current trends.  This spring there are four items that every makeup maven should consider buying.

Bright Pink Lipstick

The makeup that Sandra Bullock wore to the Oscars was strong and bright, without being heavy. In theory, I would have considered a bright pink lip to be too much for a woman over 25.  But this particular look is fresh enough that every most women can wear it.

To create this fun, flirty lip color the makeup artist left Bullock’s lips unlined and added a generous coat of Chanel Rouge Coco #22 (Saks, $30).  This rosy shade has just enough red in it to keep it from being too pink.  If you’re looking for a bright pink lipstick that doesn’t scream “1980s neon,” then this shade is for you.

 Greige Nail Polish

Greige nail polish (a grey, beige combo) is a wonderful way to wear a neutral polish with a touch of elegance.  While the most popular formulations seems to be Chanel Particulerie ($23), other shades can be found for less than $10.  Miss M will certainly be rocking the Greige this spring.

True Purple Polish

While chic, Greige nail polish doesn’t really capture my fancy.  So I purchased Nars Purple Rain polish instead (Blue Mercury, $16).  Unlike perennial CHS favorites Lincoln Park After Dark and Tokaido Express, Purple Rain isn’t an almost-black polish masquerading as dark purple.  The shade is true eggplant purple with a hint of shimmer.

A word of warning though: Wearing this polish will cause Prince lyrics to sporadically pop into your head. I never meant to cause you any sorrow, I never meant to cause you any pain… Be prepared.

Rosy Shimmer

When I’m overworked and exhausted, I start to look like Lurch’s shorter, fatter cousin.  To add a little color and shimmer to my cheeks, I use Laura Mercier’s Orchid Shimmer Block (Blue Mercury, $38).  Just a dab on the cheeks and temples and I start to look like a real person again.

Your grammar is ridiculous. Did you even finish grade school? And in general, you’re a horrible writer. Get a new hobby. I work on the Hill and everyone in my office thinks you’re a ridiculously horrible example of fashion and style on Capitol Hill. Sadly, I have to agree.

"Disgrunteled" reader needs a little help with her spelling.

  3. S says:

Not every woman can wear pink lipstick. Sometimes I think you forget about redheads.

  4. A says:

Hahah nice catch Danielle! Don’t you love when people trying to call out other people make themselves look oh so stupid!

Love the beauty buys Belle. You’re giving me hope for spring in the recent posts!! Keep them coming!

P.S. I’m wearing a combo dress similar to the Rebecca Taylor and have gotten several compliments. I’ve had it sitting in my closet since Jan and for some reason hadn’t worn it until today. Thanks for the reminder!

  5. Jill says:

"Disgrunteled", why so vicious? I don’t see grammar and writing problems in Belle’s posts. Even if I did, I’d cut her some slack. This is a labor of love from someone who has a more-than-full-time job.

  6. ~M says:

D.R. Clearly you have a personal problem with Belle that you’re too immature to talk about in person. If the blog is so offensive, don’t waste your time; read something else.

  7. Belle says:

    S-

You’re right. Bright pink lipstick would probably not be the best choice for a redheaded woman. Sorry about that. What color do you usually wear?

  8. Belle says:

As for my grammar, there have been a number of comments about how bad it is. Almost without exception, these comments contain grammatical errors. No one is immune, but I am extra lazy about my grammar.

If this is a deal breaker for you, there are other bloggers whose grammar is much better than mine. I’m sure that they would love to have a new reader.

  9. Disgrunteled Reader says:

I love you Belle, I’m just a grammar freak. Sorry for being offensive.

  10. Belle says:

    DR-

That’s okay. I know that I am lazy when it comes to my grammar. I have been making an effort to learn a little more here and there, but I’ve excelled in my career in spite of my pitiful grammar so the incentive was never there before. I’m trying to do better, but there are many flaws to fix.

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
