Belle's Post-Grammy Wrap Up

Feb 1, 2010

Holy bad fashion, Batman!  The Grammy carpet was covered in every possible faux pas imaginable from freaky footwear to highlighter colored floral prints and dresses so tight that you could almost hear the seams calling out for help.  But somehow, I managed to find five diamonds in the rough who managed to look cool and cutting edged without causing gasps of disbelief.

Only the tall, willowy Taylor Swift could carry a backless, off-the-shoulder, liquid sequins gown by Kaufman Franco and make it look flawless. Ah, to have the body of a 20-year-old again.

While a lot of people are putting Miley on their Worst Dressed lists, I actually thought she looked great.  (I know, I surprised myself as my dislike for all things Cyrus knows no bounds.)  Her Herve Leger dress fit her well, was age appropriate and paired with the right shoes and accessories gave her a rocker-chic vibe.  My only change? Ditch the nude lip, it just wasn’t flattering.

Since I was 14-years-old, I have been a fan of Romona Keveza’s wedding gowns.  Lea Michele’s sumptuous, sheer one-shoulder cocktail dress has raised Keveza’s designs to iconic status.  Combined with sleek locks, the perfect smoky eye and killer jewelry, Michele looked stunning.

Here’s a trend that you will definitely be seeing on the Oscar Red Carpet: Nude gowns.  Nominee Keri Hilson looks divine in this strapless mermaid gown (Guessing Dolce & Gabbana for the designer) with crystal embellishment.  And if you happen to have a short hair do or asymmetric cut, Ms. Hilson shows you how to glam up for evening with a simple upswept style.  She definitely wins the award for best hair and makeup.

Looking impossibly dapper and perfectly groomed in his charcoal grey suit and coordinating vest, John Legend is the epitome of cool.  Gentlemen, if you want to attract the ladies, take note.  This ensemble is positively swoon-worthy.

While this Elie Saab gown would be too extreme for a mere mortal, I think it looks positively divine on Rihanna.  The gown manages to stay feminine and frilly while still evoking the military-chic toughness that she has been working since the release of her latest album, Hard.

And as for the worst dressed…

What do you get when you mix a black swimsuit, fishnets, studded pumps and a sheer overlay? The return of Crazy Britney.  It really makes me long for the sheer Versace dress that she wore to the 2000 VMAs.  Expect the pink wig to make an appearance any day now.

Pardon me, while I bang my head off the desk. (Thump, thump, thump.)

Not that I don’t wish I had her body, but something about the above picture makes Taylor look a little lumpy in the chest/muffin top area; and all the pics I’ve seen seem to suggest someone should have advised her better on undergarments.

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
