Faux Pas: Fly Me to the Moon

Jan 20, 2010

For the past two years, I have fought a crusade against ugly footwear particularly Uggs and Crocs.  While I have made some progress at getting my friend group to abandon their podiatric peccadilloes, every time I leave home, I am bombarded with shearling boots and hot pink plastic foot condoms.

I was feeling down on myself regarding my lack of success until I realized that I simply came to the game too late.  By the time I started beating the drum, the market was already flooded with Uggs and Crocs.  How can one blog un-ring a bell?  Maybe the key is to get in on the ground floor, to smite the aggressor before it grows to maturity?

Meet the newest pest on the faux pas block: Moon Boots.  These snow boots on steroids are invading our homes, schools and workplaces at an alarming rate.  Just this morning, I saw one pair in Starbucks and another on the train.  We must stamp out this virus before it spreads!

Sadly the comments on the Zappos site make it clear that the infection is already on the march…

I adore my Moon Boots. They are surprisingly light weight and in acid green, serve as a wonderful splash of color on dreary winter days.

I’m all for a pop of color, but do acid green Moon Boots qualify as a “splash?”  More like a tidal wave, a tsunami of ugliness, if you will.

They are so warm & lightweight and in pink they are actually kind of stylish. I wear them with my skinny jeans tucked in. I was getting bored clunking around in my old Uggs so these are something new. They do have a super thick sole making them a little awkward for driving, but they make me look taller!

I am telling you, Uggs are a gateway drug.  Allowing your friends and family to wear shearling will only lead to more ugliness.  Friends don’t let friend wear Moonboots.

Also, can she even feel the pedal while wearing these things?  Forget a fashion citation, this woman is on her way reckless driving charge.

These boots get 2 thumbs up. Way up. They are the most comfortable shoes that I have ever worn and they are great for snow and ice because they have suction cups on the bottom. These come in handy if you’re clumsy and have a tendency to fall.

They are clearly designed for winter, but I find them to be very stylish and I intend on wearing them through all the seasons. I love that the inside feels like a Tempur-Pedic mattress and the boots can be worn on either foot to cut down on confusion over the whole left foot-right foot issue. Although I highly doubt that these boots are approved for space travel to the moon, they are probably the next best thing. One drawback that I discovered the hard way: these boots weren’t made for dancing, specifically the Moonwalk (the name is deceiving). Otherwise, I am a huge fan.

I don’t even know where to begin; the choices are endless: suction cups, space travel or dancing the Moonwalk…I think I need to ponder this question over a bottle of Maker’s Mark. Maybe then I’ll understand why anyone would think that astronauts need snowboots on the Moon.  I also wonder what kind of person needs suction cups to keep her from falling down.  Probably the same kind of person who finds that left shoe, right shoe thing a little bit difficult to master.

These people must be stopped!

  1. In the "insult to injury" category: Brooks Brothers is selling Moon Boots. (This could probably also go in the "You can’t make this stuff up" category.)

Grins & Giggles, love your site!

I was just going to have a shot, but now, I think the bottle. Why, Brooks Brothers, why? (tear)

I agree. These things are atrocious. But just so I know, what am I supposed to wear on my feet when it’s snowed six inches out. Even with the thickest socks, Wellies just don’t cut it.

  4. Hmmm….moon boots have been around for decades. I am 23 and I remember wearing them as a child after skiing. I never wore them as a fashion statement, but I do have some pseudo hipster friends who attempt to "rock" them to make a statement, but lets be honest…they are huge, clunky and hideous. I will still use them on ski trips…but not day to day, but then again I live in San Diego most of the time.

Is this part of the 80s retro trend? And aren’t they hot?

I got these after a lot of searching. Wanted something warm and waterproof that I could wear with both jeans and even dress pants if I had to. Hard to find something that fit the bill and wasn’t incredibly clunky. Maybe not the most elegant boot around but they’ve been really useful.

Did you see the news of the Ugg/Jimmy Choo collaboration? The horror!

Just saw a young lady walking down the street in these the other day and wondered what you might have to say about this fresh hell. They can be worn on either foot?? What is she 2? Hunter Wellies with the lining do me just fine thanks. I even saw a pair with Christian Dior logo stamped all over them….ugh! I live in NY, but for what it’s worth I was raised in the South;)

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
