Airplane Style: Comfortable Chic

Dec 18, 2009

This holiday season, I am fighting back against bad fashion! No longer will I accept that pajama pants are okay simply because you are flying.  No longer will I allow your unwashed hair in a messy pony to be acceptable because you leave at 6:00AM.  I’m taking a stand, and you should too!

Contrary to popular belief, I don’t hate comfortable clothes.  I simply believe that utility, comfort and style are not mutually exclusive.  A woman can be comfortable without having to resort to Juicy Couture and Uggs, a novel concept I know.  Don’t believe me?  Well, let me prove it to you.

Gianni Binni Cait Dress (Dillard’s, $98)

The sweaterdress is the fashionista’s answer to the Snuggie. It’s as close as you can get to wearing your pjs on the plane without actually wearing your pjs on the plane.  This is a no-no by the way, in case you were confused.

A.Ok Purple Strips Scarf (Oak, $48)

Zoa Legging (Couture Candy, $39)

Bonanza Slouch Boot (Steve Madden, $99)

Add a pair of fleece socks, and these boots will rival any of those awful Uggs most women wear.  Plus, they’ll keep your feet warm and toasty on the plane.

JPK Paris Satchel (Nordstrom, $198)

You don’t have to wear your pjs or your sweatpants to be comfortable on the plane, with just a little effort, you can look like a million bucks when you fly.  And here’s a tip from me to you, it’s easier to get upgraded for free when you are dressed like you belong in the first class cabin.  It’s happened to me several times.

As one of the afore-mentioned "hates to wear jeans on plane" types (although I don’t believe I’ve sent hate mail over it:) thanks for this! I travel a lot for my job and sometimes have to show up to a dinner or meeting as soon as the plane lands – and yeah, flying from DC to LA in jeans is not comfy on that long a flight. The biggest problem is finding something to keep you warm enough on the freezing plane but that can be quickly layered off once you hit ground in CA…

    Love it! Thanks!!

Substitute a White and Warren wrap for the A.Ok scarf, and you’ve got it just about right! I never travel without one stashed in my hand luggage.

  4. Lou says:

I *love* this outfit. Now I need to sit on my hands to keep from ordering it.

  5. Sarah says:

Love both of these looks, thanks for sharing!

Thank god. I’ve flown standby on Delta for years and am so happy someone else recognizes the need for good fashion when traveling. Delta enforces a strict dress code for all of its standby beneficiaries and I’ve definitely seen the Juicy Couture/Uggs combo turned away many times.

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
