The Find: A Relaxed Office Dress

Jan 23, 2024

When I think back to my last career as a special counsel at the Montana State Capitol and the wardrobe that kept me looking lawyerly, there are a few clutch players.  None was more important on a busy morning, when I was rushing to hand Sloane off to her nanny and get out the door, than a relaxed dress that could do anything.

Boots and tights on a late-start Monday?  High heels and a blazer on Wednesday?  Ballet flats and a cardigan on Friday?  The dress that could do it all (or at least most) was a rare thing.  This is such a dress.

This Maggy London button accent dress is a great option for the woman who work in an office, even if it’s just three days per week.  The material is a stretch knit, so it looks more like crepe but wears like jersey.  And the style, with a faux wrap skirt and v-neck, is flattering on many figures.  If the buttons are too much of a contrast for you, you can easily swap them out for a darker tortoise shell or an all black.

Prefer short sleeve?  They make that style too.

The dress runs sizes 0 to 18.  However, I took a 6, when the size guide says I should be an 8 (and really probably could have gotten away with a 4).  So unless you have a larger bust, I suggest sizing down.

Maggy London is not a high fashion brand, but the dresses are easy to wear, machine washable on gentle, and perfect for traveling.  Nordstrom Rack always has a lot of options from this line.  If I had a conference in a warm weather locale this winter, I would grab this dress or this dress for evening events.  A punchy floral never hurt anyone.

The Beauty Edit: Neck Creams

Nora Ephron was right: I feel bad about my neck. As I move through my forties, the creases have turned into chasms. The skin sags like a pair of sweatpants with aging elastic. It’s not great. But it’s just a natural part of getting older. Over the past year, it feels like I’ve tried every […]
