The Find: The Only Wire-Free Bra That Didn’t Fail Me

Aug 18, 2023

After Sloane was born, I developed a seething hatred for underwire bras.  The trouble was that I had also developed a larger, slightly droopier bust.  It was a cruel irony.

As a result, I’ve spent the past year searching for a comfortable, supportive wire-free bra that didn’t bunch, pinch, lose shape or give me a uniboob.  Several times throughout this search, I thought I’d found the one.  But every time, they disappointed me.  It was maddening.

Then, I found it.  And dozens of wears and washes later, this bra and I are still going strong.

I tried three bras from True & Co.  The first one was made of thick, scratchy material that bunched and folded in a very uncomfortable way.  The second was comfortable with enough support for smaller bust, but my nipples were always on display and I wasn’t comfortable with my headlights constantly shining.  But this one, the Triangle Lace Racerback Bra, this one was the one.

The racerback style provides just enough support to lift and separate.  The straps don’t dig.  The material is smooth and lies flat.  And the hint of lace at the back makes it pretty.  My only complaint is that there are removable cups, but since those cups are what dimmed the visible nipple issue, I will tolerate them.

I love this bra.  I was so disappointed yesterday when I realized that it was in the wash, that I bought two more.  Right now, Nordstrom has the best selection of sizes in the pale nude color and Amazon has the best selection of colors, since it’s True & Co’s fulfillment partner.

I may try some other True & Co. style to see if another one captures my heart in the same way this racerback number has, but this bra will be on heavy rotation in my wardrobe.

I love True & Co. and have taken far too much joy in converting others to the brand. My favorite is the “True Body Lift V Neck Bra” — have you tried this one? As an aside, I immediately rip out every single removable cup and on days when I don’t want high-beams on full display I’ll wear silicone nipple covers with these bras.

[Note: After a bit of a “happy accident” I only use the Hollywood Fashion Secrets brand in the larger size (I think they’re meant for D+) even though I have a smaller bust (B cup). I initially bought the larger size nipple covers when I wasn’t paying attention running into the store to grab pasties a few hours before a wedding and ended up being obsessed with them. While the standard size ones had always worked well enough, I still felt like there were times that I was left with a little poof/blob that didn’t seamlessly transition to the rest of my boobs; the larger ones are more like the size of your palm and not only do I feel like they’re more secure, they’re also undetectable with knit/jersey/silky tops.]

Target also carries True and Co. bras (a la SPANX and Assets by Spanx model). Would love to know what you think of the lower price-point versions!

YES. I converted to True and Co bras during the pandemic and haven’t looked back… I’m actually wearing this exact racerback style right now. I love the thicker strap/v neck ones (more like a bralette) and the skinny strap non-racerback version too. Totally endorse this brand/bras too!

I’d love to hear how these work for larger busts. I went from a 34C to a 36DDD or E post-baby/post-pandemic weight gain. I need something that’s going to lift these ladies up and keep them there without adding a lot of extra bulk. I don’t mind an underwire, so far all the wireless bras I’ve tried droop or the back rides up. It just hasn’t been a good look.

Of course it’s fine to wear wire-free bras if that’s your preference! But if an underwire is uncomfortable, that’s because the bra doesn’t fit! As a woman with a large bust who craves lift and support, underwires are a must. I recommend getting measured at a speciality lingerie store, I was amazed at how wrong my bra size was!

Not all wires are created equal! I find freya and fantasie bras, which I buy from bravissimo in the uk have thinner wires that don’t hurt as much as panache wires or wires from other brands. Bravissimo has a sleep bra that comes in navy and grey that has no wires and that fits like a lighter sports bra. I wear it on weekends and at home and while not perfect, is the closest I’ve come to support. I’m usually are 34 f cup in all these brands.

The best wire-free comfy bra that I have been telling everyone about is the Jockey Forever Fit Supersoft Modal V-Neck Molded Cup Bra. I randomly bought a discounted one at one of their outlet stores last year. Similar to you, I was so sad whenever it was in the wash. I ended up ordering two more colors so I could always have one in rotation.

For those looking for a bra for a larger bust, try r/A Bra That Fits. I’ve been a longtime lurker but taking their advice is on my list of things to do.
