Doctor's Appointment Chic

Oct 3, 2011

I spent the bulk of last week fighting a terrible cold.  And judging from the empty shelves in the cold medicine section of CVS, I wasn’t the only one.

Now, when you’re sick, how you look tends to be the first thing that goes out the window.  When I’m curled up on my couch sipping Theraflu and praying for the coughing to end, I could care less what I’m wearing.  But when I need to go to the hospital, where the cute doctors live, I put forward a bit of effort.

Polyvore Set Here.

For a look that is cozy, comfortable and chic, you need sweatpants that are clean and fit well.  These sweatpants from J.Crew are both, just keep in mind that you may need to size down.  I also added a chunky, knit sweater for warmth and style.  Add a pair of metallic sneakers, a stylish tote bag and a pair of stud earrings and your outfit is almost complete.

I also added a pair of oversized sunnies.  A lack of quality sleep and a refusal to wear makeup while sick, makes a chic pair of sunglasses an absolute necessity.

You can look stylish while ill, whether you choose to is up to you.  But I find that looking like a person who’s not sick makes me feel a little less awful.  Well, that and Zicam.

I like the concept a lot, I think the shoes remind me a bit much of my grandmother's walking shoes. Then again, my grandmother does wear pumas, so it's hard to say if I'm just poorly associating. I do LOVE the appropriate sweats/sweater combo. I didn't get this flu that went around, but if I do, I know what I'll wear to the minute clinic.

I like the sweater, earrings and bag. But the sweatpants/shoe combo remind me of something the white-haired ladies down at the retirement home in Boca wear on their way to senior jazzercise class 🙂

My vote would be for flats rather than sneakers also. I say this completely hypocritically as someone who ended up in the ER after slicing my hand, wearing pajamas, a ratty t-shirt, and clogs (yes, clogs, at least they were not Uggs!). The exhausted-but-cute male doctors were not really in the mood to notice anything about my attire, but next time I will definitely try to look cuter.

In reference to the shoes, I wanted to put up a pair of Cole Haan Air Bria flats, because that' what I wear. But I couldn't find a pic, and they are pretty pricey, so I chose the closest thing.

Amy made me think… I know that most people frown upon Uggs, (and not to worry I've gotten rid of the one that I thought were “OMG so cute!” back in college), but I've hung onto one pair (they're the black sweater knit ones). Anywho, is there any time other than to the doctor's office (did that last week) that is appropriate to wear them? Or was I already a doctor's office fashion don't?

  6. Belle says:

Uggs are appropriate to wear in the following circumstances: At home. When sick. When the temperature is below freezing. Other than that, no, not really.

Uggs are especially inappropriate in summer, when it's wet outside (their suede, after all), to church, to work, to special events and to my house. That's right, a truly clueless person (who knows I write this blog and who reads this blog) wore them to my home.

As a shorter gal, I don't think I can get away with sweatpants under any circumstance; the tapered leg is always bad news for me. I like the look, but with something like the Lucy walkabout pant (in black) versus sweatpants (plus, they're cheap. Winning!) https://www.lucy.com/Walkabout%20Pant/224073_SALE,default,pd.html?cgid=Bottoms_Pants&dwvar_224073_SALE_color=CINDER

  8. Belle says:

Sara- Those are a good selection. The J.Crew aren't as tapered in reality as they look in the photo. But you should choose the pants that look best on you, clearly, you've done that.

  9. Katherine says:

Sweat pants in public? Being sick is no excuse!

  10. Belle says:

You can wear them to the gym, you can wear them to the doctor. That's it. I may be a stickler for the fashion rules, but even I live in the real world, where sometimes, women just need a quality pair of yoga pants or sweatpants.

Thanks for the post. Using this post as guidance for my trip to the doctor today.

Belle, I absolutely love this post. It shows the human side of this blog. We all get sick, and we all need a pair of sweatpants and comfy sweater (not sweatshirt!) to be sick in. Rather than going to the doctor's in pajamas, a reasonable outfit can still be put together that won't look like we were crawling out of our dorm room to attend the campus doctor's.

your true to life posts that still ask for higher standards like this one are what keep me coming back.

    Love it.

You know, I don't have a big problem with the shoes, but I have a general bias to sweatpants. They don't do anyone's ass any favours. A wide-leg yoga pant can be equally cosy and much more flattering even in the same ensemble. I second the comments above that a super comfy ballet flat would add an extra chic edge to the outfit if you can muster the effort.
