Monday Outfit: Add a Scarf to It

Silk scarves have been trending for a few years now. Finding ways to wear them that don’t remind me of the grey-haired ladies who used to sit in front of me in church is a distinct challenge. So when I spotted this outfit, I decided it was worth sharing. The scarf adds life to the otherwise basic separates and doesn’t feel try hard.

Black pants and a white shirt — basic, easy, and perfectly work appropriate. This Pinterest outfit takes these easy separates and makes them something more without overdoing it. Here’s how I would recreate it.

The Pants. Wide leg pants are still in for fall, and even when they go back out of style, I will still be wearing them. I’m just happier and more comfortable in a wide leg pant. These ones from Favorite Daughter are lusciously wide. The pleats are so dramatic. (Who knew black pants could make a statement?) If you need something a little less dramatic, Reiss has you covered.

The Shirt. Go to your closet, dig for a minute, you likely have a simple white button down (or three) hiding in there somewhere. If you don’t this wrinkle-free Untuckit one is my absolute favorite for the price. BR Factory also has a simple button down in every neutral, work color imaginable.

The Shoes. I have mixed feelings about ballet flats with bows. But recently, designers have been styling them with pointed or almond toes instead of round ones and the change has taken the twee of it all down several notches. This pair from Margaux’s Alison Roman collection (yes, that Alison Roman) are extremely chic. I also like the more dramatic bow on this French Sole pair. But whatever style you choose, the point is critical because it lengthens the leg and brings the pant into a deeper shape.

The Scarf. The gold, white and black scarf is a nice choice, but it’s not the choice for me. I like a bit more color for this look. I ultimately chose this Jessie Zhao scarf because I loved the vibrant floral pattern. The mix of colors lets you bring it in and out of other outfits easily. I also considered this Liberty London scarf and the Aurate scarf, both would hues of green and orange.

The Accessories. The scarf makes such a statement, it’s easy to keep the rest of the outfit simple. I added a rolo chain bracelet and a simple oblong hoop. Adding a blue handbag plays into the colors of the scarf. I might also wear a navy or steel blue trench coat with the look.

The Styling. I would wear my hair up for this, even though it is currently bobbed. This TikTok style works for me. The long ponytail in the inspo photo is a great look too. I’d also keep the makeup simple, but add a bit more eyeliner and mascara to make my eyes pop.
