The Range: Tortoise Flats

Aug 10, 2026

Yesterday was a scorcher. The air is so thick with smoke and ash that it makes the heat oppressive. And there I am, delivering food for World Central Kitchen in a black WCK t-shirt, sweating like the perimenopausal woman that I am, carrying boxes of donated meals to survivors, volunteers, and first responders. It’s crazy how much can change in eight days. But the world spends madly on.

Like me, many of you are probably wondering how it’s time to start talking about fall fashion — because here, in America, the fall styles appear when the summer is still baking because, even in an age of fast fashion, we still insist on selling tall boots and wool blazers before Labor Day — but it is. Make it make sense. But I don’t make the rules, and in fall, if you don’t shop a little early, things do sell out because the shopping optimism is so high in September. So let’s start with a fashion item that is wearable in most weather, and one of my longterm favorites — tortoise flats.

Billionaire Oligarch Who No One Voted For

I try not to covet designer fashions — but every pair of Roger Vivier shoes I see has me wondering why I don’t still call this feature the 10th Commandment (#IYKYK).

I bought these Stuart Weitzman Patent Tortoise 50 Pumps ($525) last year for session. I have no regrets. They are comfortable for a heel. They look great with anything. They draw compliments all the time. There was not a single day when I wore them when someone did not ask me who the designer was. Worth every spendy little penny.

Legislative Aide

Ann Taylor has these awesome Tortoise Slingbacks ($116). The heel isn’t too high, and the slingback bridges summer into fall beautifully. I also like the square vamp for something extra.

I tried to find a better photo of these Franco Sarto flat tortoise slingbacks ($69), because I’ve seen them in person and they are great. The square toe gives them a modern look and the slight lift keeps your hems off the ground.

I do love those Stuart Weitzman pumps, even if the price tag makes me cry. Every time I see them here I’m like, “I want them, please let me find a comparable style that I won’t question my sanity to buy,” haha. Thanks for highlighting them again, though, I really think they’re a beautiful shoe.
