The Range: The Belts

Jul 30, 2026

I used to own so many belts. Just a stupid number of belts. Last year, I cleared out all of the belts except four. Four is really all you need.

I keep a dark brown belt with a simple buckle for jeans. It goes with any brown shoe or boot I might be wearing, and it can be worn with navy or brown suiting. This one from Banana Republic is well made, and usually on sale. For something under-$50, try BR Factory.

For a black belt, I want a medium width that I can wear with jeans or pants without it looking too skinny. I also need to be able to wear it with dresses without it being too wide. This croco belt with a simple buckle is a great option. Quince also has a slightly wider black belt for $54.

In 2010, I bought a $4 stretch leather belt at H&M. I still wear it weekly when I’m in the office. It is the perfect way to add structure to a wrap dress or define the waist on a sheath dress. I just put it on and shift the buckle to the back. It basically looks like you tied a large ribbon around your waist. Amazon has the same belt for $10.

For summer, you need a belt to jazz up cotton dresses. It needs to be raffia, it needs to have some stretch, and it should have a simple buckle. This J.McLaughlin belt is a top pick. They also have this discounted belt left in a few sizes. Old Navy also has the budget choice.

Has anyone tried/ordered the Bella adjustable belts? I keep getting targeted ads for them and have been debating if they’re worth the hype.

I’ve been using the Bella clear adjustable belt for years since I read it’s one of Oprah’s favorite items. I’m on my 4th one given the plastic clasp that wore out. I’m 75 and don’t tuck my shirts in at this point. I saw on Amazon that the belts now come in colors and different styles which I plan to purchase. BTW yes, I’m older, worked in DC, and enjoy Capitol Hill Style!
