The Jumble: January 29, 2026

Jan 29, 2026

This weekend, Sloane and I had a sleepover. Kyle slept in the guest bedroom and she slept in our bed with me. We watched the Bluey movie, painted her nails, and told “secrets” while we snuggled. As she was starting to fall asleep, she reached over and tucked her tiny hand into mine, “Mama, this is the most exciting sleepover ever.”

Yes, baby, it is.

+ The drugstore mascara that I am absolutely loving.

+ The cost of staying calm.

+ Loafer mules are the hot shoe for spring.

+ Practical advice for learning to put down your phone.

+ Outnet Finds: a chic cardigan, a gorgeous cocktail dress, and this woven tote.

+ Crispy carnitas tacos for your Super Bowl party.

+ J.Crew’s fabulous rollneck sweater comes in cable knit now.

+ Career Women: You’ve Made It, So Why Are You Still Running?

+ Need a gym bag and garment bag in one? This is it.

+ The Tyranny of the Hot Mom.

+ Boden has great Valentine’s looks. This sweatshirt is fun.

+ Need a new podcast: This is the next one on my list.

My daughter is 7 and she still asks to sleep with me when my husband is out of town. When he’s gone we get pizza and watch nostalgic 90s kids movies. It doesn’t get old.

I recently got the Bloom card to block distracting apps during certain times of the day. It works on a schedule and I never think about it and it’s helped me stay off my phone during large blocks of the day.

The book “How to break up with your phone” (I listened to the audio book on my phone, of course) had some great tools. I didn’t follow the actual day-by-day plan that she lays out, but I started using the tips that made the most sense for me. Moving Instagram to the 3rd screen on my phone made a ridiculous amount of difference for me – Instagram is so panicked that I haven’t been spending enough time on it that it tries to send me update emails about who has posted new reels (gotta figure out how to turn that off!), and it’s not even stuff I care about anymore. Another thing that has been huge for me with interrupting the automatic navigating to news and shopping sites has been the chrome extensions “Limit” (for setting a max amount of time that I want to spend daily on each site), and “Pause” which gives you a few seconds of green screen when you navigate to one of the sites on your pause list – and then you have to proactively click “continue” if you actually want to continue. The extensions are made by the company behind the “Freedom” app which was recommended by the “how to break up with your phone author” – I was going to start using the app, but I actually haven’t found it necessary with the 2 extensions.

For me, turning off the “Discover” “feature” on Google that would feed me endless targeted news (and “news”) stories made a difference and I don’t miss it at all.

  4. Anna says:

Umm what is this Bluey movie you speak of?!?! My Google search only shows one coming out in 2027.

  5. Katherine says:

It is annoying/disappointing to go to an article and not be able to read it without subscribing to something (Hot Mom article).

  6. Hayes Blythe says:

L’Oréal Extensionist is so good. The last drugstore mascara I felt this way about was CG Lash Blast in ‘07. Extensionist, I just can’t say enough good things!

  7. Ana says:

Love this – “Mama, this is the most exciting sleepover ever.”
