I am dreading the day that I have to return to wearing pants with buttons every day. I have become so dependent on soft pants. So I decided to make a three ways featuring my favorite soft pants.

The Pants. Varley makes the best soft pieces. Yes, they are pricey. But they last. I am wearing the same sweatshirt that I bought two years ago, and it looks new. The key to keeping them looking great is to wash them in a laundry bag, and dry them in the same bag on low.
These pants are some of my favorites. They are so comfortable and have a beautiful drape. Depending on what you wear with them, they’re more versatile than you think. Let me show you.
Drop Off. The set is how I get out of bed in the morning. I swap my nighttime pajamas for my daytime pajamas and start the chaos of getting a toddler ready for school. The soft pants just make that easier. So when in doubt, just add the matching Varley sweatshirt.
To juice this outfit a bit, add the J.Crew coat from this morning because it’s a good one. The olive looks great with the navy. For something less spendy, Cole Haan has a similar look.
Add a cool sneaker, tortoise sunnies, a great crossbody sling, and a baseball cap, and you’re done. You look very pulled together and you’re wearing sweats.
WFH. Cropped button up shirts came on the scene this summer, and I was against them. Which should come as no shock to you, as you know my initial reaction to nearly every trend is ick. But when I saw one of my friends wear one in a way that felt approachable, I thought, okay, maybe this would work for me.
What I like about these shirts is the straight-across-the-bottom cut. If you find one that’s long enough to cover your waist band, you don’t have to worry about tucking or not tucking, which is a relief.
J.Crew has this very simple shirt that I recently purchased. Old Navy has a similar one in several stripes and styles. I added a striped sweater from H&M that I own and love. Quince makes a good one too. You can either sling it over your shoulders or layer it. Add slippers and a Zoom-approved earring, and you’re done.
Casual Office. I love this embroidered Boden cardigan. It would look lovely layered under a navy textured blazer with a professional outfit. You can also wear it in the spring over warm-weather pieces. The stitching is just beautiful, and the colors are really gorgeous.
Want a more wintry look? This Land’s End cardigan has gorgeous Fair Isle details in a very approachable, wearable palette.
I layered the sweater over a coordinating purple blouse. WHBM also has a gorgeous blouse in a pretty amethyst. You could also go for a tonal look with a navy blouse.
A coordinating purse felt right here, but purple felt to matchy-matchy, so I chose this lovely green bag from Anne Klein. It’s a great size, and it has chic details that don’t overwhelm the look. I also chose these simple studs for the same reason — let the embroidery be the show.
To complete the look, I chose these navy mules. I wanted a navy shoe here, and my second choice were navy Rothy’s. But depending on the office, you could get away with a navy sneaker as well. I would just swap white laces for navy ones.

I’m intrigued! It’s hard to tell with model bodies, where does the waist band hit you? Sounds like the pleating isn’t unflattering?
It’s on the high side. The pleating is longer so I find it lays flatter.
Interesting that you dry garments in a bag. I use bags for washing but never tried drying. You must use a big bag? What bags do you recommend?
I have something similar to this, https://amzn.to/4qFw1hu
What length inseam did you get?
29.5, because I’m 5’7″ but my inseam is shorter. They recommend getting the 32″ of you’re over 5’8″.
