The Find: My Winter Coat

Oct 29, 2025

For a couple of years, I’ve been wearing a fall-weight trench during the winter months as my dress coat. Did it work? Yes. Was I cold? Sometimes, yes. But this is the Pacific Northwest, not Montana, so I could get away with it. But recently, I realized that I needed something different.

The trench always felt formal, and this is not a formal place. So I went looking for something that bridged that gap between formal and casual, but with a bit of style. Luckily, J.Crew is having a Passport Sale with 30% off with code SHOPFALL, so it’s a good time to talk about the coat that I selected for this winter.

This Toscana Stadium Cloth Coat has a modern cocoon shape that looks great over dressier work clothes and injects some style into school drop off attire. Plus, the dramatic stand collar zips up really high to combat the biting wind and keep you warm.

One of my complaints about winter coats is that if I layer up with a sweater or a blazer, they become uncomfortably tight and I can’t button or zip my coat. Not this one. It offers the extra room you need without looking too bulky. It would also be a great coat for someone who is pregnant or postpartum.

The coat comes in five chic colors. I chose the olive, but I also seriously considered the ivory. The coat is available in petite and tall, and sizes run up to 3X.

I love this coat. Last week, I brought it to Wisconsin, and when I had to wear my sweats for a travel day, I still looked chic with the coat, my Chord cap, and my sunglasses, even though I felt like I just rolled out of bed.

{this post contains affiliate links that may generate commission for the author; I’ve been repping J.Crew since this blog started because I’m a classic girlie, but they did offer me a small bonus to promote the Passport Sale, which was fine because I needed to talk about this coat anyway}

    Oh, she’s pretty. I’ve been thinking I need to update my winter coat, and I’m having a hard time between olive (classic, neutral, a fave color) and red (bright for dreary winter and looks like the perfect Alabama crimson, roll tide). My memory is J.Crew’s stadium cloth is a great fabric. I was looking at a similar stand collar coat from Quince but this isn’t too much more with the sale.

    I have the old Cocoon Coat version of this style and can attest it’s very versatile! Including in Montana winters. (Unless you need to pack it into your suitcase, then I would not recommend, because the stadium cloth is quite bulky.)

    I heard the pockets of this coat are fake. Too bad they are not real if that is the case.

    How’s the sizing? The website says to size down – do you feel that’s accurate?
    Why do the make fake pockets… pet peeve of mine.

    I own a past year version of this coat (in the larger of the two sizes I’d normally consider) and wore it – zipped – through an entire pregnancy, so I can endorse this use! It’s about as put-together as I felt in layers in the third trimester.

    Do you use Scotchguard or anything like that on this coat or coats in general? I’m noticing the collar hits/rubs against my cheek/chin, I’m sure makeup will accumulate eventually but I want to protect the coat as much as I can. Any tips on how to avoid this?
