What a week. How is it only Wednesday? Let’s bridge the gap with a few questions from the reader mail bag.
DM: What’s your favorite recent purchase?
For me, these olive green linen pants.
For Sloane, this adorable rainbow gingham dress (on deep sale!).
Abra, thank you for helping me find a new suit for RTW. I’m also traveling for work again and I need a new makeup bag. Please, nothing with clear plastic. They always rip. ALP
I use the Rothy’s makeup bags. Mine are several years old, still look new. They’re also washable.
Abra:
Have you find any good peridot jewelry? My son is also an August baby.
Leila
Some months hit the birthstone jackpot — May/Emerald, April/Diamond — but not everyone was so lucky. Sloane is a peridot, which is usually electric lime green, so finding jewelry has been a challenge. Ana Luisa makes a really tiny, dainty pendant. For something more substantial, I ordered this Oh Clementine pendant to see how I like the mixed metals with it.
If you have a tough birthstone (or one of your children does) leave your best jewelry ideas in the comments.
Hi Abra!
I love seeing your office outfit inspo posts, this morning’s was one of my favourite! I’d love it if you could share some suggestions for officewear for pregnant people. My rotation of oversized button downs and lowrise pants is getting a little tired.
Katie
Dressing for the office while pregnant was both the easiest thing I’ve ever done and the hardest. It was hard because 1) there is still a lack of stylish maternity wear on the market, and 2) something can fit in week 24 and not in week 25. But it was also the easiest thing because when my outfits were either the same thing on repeat or a bit lack luster, I could just say, “Well, I’m pregnant and move on,” which was pretty freeing.
My favorite spot for maternity wear was Seraphine. I loved the more tailored styles and the easy-to-wear pieces. This ribbed tank dress is worn under a short sleeve knit, which is perfect for work. This shirt dress in a beach stripe is super chic. I would have worn the heck out of this tweed jacket. So for a semi-professional or professional office, this is a great brand.
The other place I had good luck was H&M. A fitted t-shirt dress is always a good option. I also really like this eyelet blouse, which is so pretty. Also, I would wear this pointelle skirt and sweater look right now.
If you’re struggling with your style, think about what your favorite non-maternity pieces were and see if you can find them in a maternity style. I loved jersey blazers for work, and so finding an NYDJ blazer in a larger size got me through a lot of tough styling situations.
Also, don’t sleep on second-hand maternity. I would say 75% of the clothes I wore during my pregnancy were from Poshmark or Thredup. Rent the Runway is also doing maternity rentals, as does Nuuly.
Hi! Love your blog, located in capitol hill near h st ne.
I have a question: do you know of any nice looking daily pill boxes? since i have epilepsy I will be likely taking meds for a long time & it would be nice to upgrade from cvs offerings. thanks!
This is the pill box I used while I was pregnant. My former boss uses this one from Etsy. The Internet is enamored with this pretty, sleek one.
Hi Belle.
My partner and i are planning a city hall wedding at the end of summer. Just the two of us and two friends (and two of our friends – apparently our city requires that we supply the witnesses). I Would love some help finding something to wear that is appropriately festive but not too formal. I know i dont want white but ivory/champagne would be fine, as would a pastel. I am open to dresses or something less common like a jumpsuit or a two piece set. I Would love it if you have ideas to share.
Thanks, d.
Best wishes on your engagement. Let’s see what we can find.
Pastels. This rose gold strapless dress has a flirty, vintage vibe. This pale blue dress has a gorgeous floral embroidery. I also like this Wedgewood blue printed dress.
Ivory. If I were getting married tomorrow at a courthouse or city hall, I would wear this ethereal floral strapless dress from Anthropologie. The thing just glows, but it is not a traditional wedding dress. I also like this La Double J dress with a pale blue shoe. This Rouland Mouret dress has a wonderful 1930s courthouse wedding vibe (just add a brooch).
For something more affordable, the 3-D flowers on this slightly-tropical Farm Rio dress. Technically this Anthro dress is a soft ivory, but for a gown, it has a lovely relaxed vibe.

I love that both my boys are September, and my engagement ring just happened to be a sapphire!
Pricey suggestion for d’s wedding outfit, but I absolutely lust over these silk pieces at Gaala https://gaala.com/en-us/collections/wedding-dresses-boutique
Too bad I’m already married ..
I second the RTR Maternity suggestion. I had a monthly subscription in my last trimester. I mixed RTR pieces with my own maternity wear from Boob or Storq. And Goodwill usually has some maternity clothes for cheap.
I found my pill box on etsy: https://www.etsy.com/listing/1860325707/art-nouveau-swan-rush-and-iris-romantic?ref=yr_purchases
Some cute options on there.
Thank you and thanks Abra for responding to my q!
I’m the one that clicked on ALL the wedding dresses. Yep, that was me. Married 13 years over here and wish I could pick out a new dress every year. 🙂
Haha same, girl, same!!
Thank you so much for the maternity suggestions! It’s my birthday next week so the ecru version of that Seraphine shirt dress has gone straight in my basket!
*taupe, not ecru, I always mix those up
I’m a jeweler and it makes me sad that so many women think they have to wear their birthstone even when they don’t like it.
Wear a gem that makes you happy! Look at the colors in your wardrobe and choose a gem that goes along.
Also, most birthstones have options. August was always peridot which is a beautiful color but some people don’t wear that color. A few years ago the powers that be proclaimed a second choice for August: pink spinel. Spinel is a natural gemstone that occurs in several colors. The pink is beautiful and gray spinel is trending lately too.
Visit a jeweler to learn about the different gemstones and see the amazing colors that come from the earth. I call them nature’s candies!
I agree – look at the options if you don’t like the traditional choice. With a November birthday, I had a topaz. In my teens and 20s I thought it was just ugly – my mom figured out that a blue topaz existed (this was pre-internet) and she’s used that every since.
I’m a May birthday, and my daughter is August. I’m waiting for this to be back in stock: https://www.localeclectic.com/products/shades-of-you-ombre-birthstone-ring?variant=43791842345136
Ombre gemstones, going from dark green (me) to light green (her). I’m going for a necklace, but rings are also an option. I’m really excited.
I’ve seen that one. It is so pretty
Omg thank you for understanding the plight of August birthdays, when I was little it was deeply painful to have an ugly color.
My brother was August, and my original due date (I was 10 weeks premie) was August, so I was always grateful to have dodged it. Strange how we put so much focus on this made up thing, but it’s as pervasive as the Zodiac.
I lived in Seraphine, mostly purchased from ThredUp and some new, during my pregnancy. 10/10 on quality and fit.
As for birthstone jewelry, Haverhill is fantastic quality for the price with top notch customer service. I got a birthstone and initial necklace after my son was born and I’m waiting to add more pieces from them to my collection. I also find the gemstones they use to be very lovely shades for all of the months.
When my kiddo was born, I got a birth flower necklace from the brand Rellery (https://rellery.com/collections/necklaces)
It was cute, well priced and three years later, having been worn all the time, still looks brand new. Mine is the “bold flower” but they have lots of good options.
The Birthstone gods are cruel. I also have a peridot child and a pearl child. Pearls and Peridots really do not mix.
I’m surprised people are so committed to sticking to the literal birthstones if they don’t happen to like the stone! Why not just get a beautiful stone you love that reminds you of your child in some way, and then pass the piece down to them?
If I was looking for an heirloom quality piece, I probably would, but for something for every day, I’ll just stick to the literal.
