My favorite early-twenty-something walked into the restaurant in a what appeared to be a vintage Lucky Jean denim maxi skirt. “What is that?” I asked with a mix of surprise and suspicion.
“Isn’t it the best? I found it in my Mom’s closet.” 700 deep breaths and two cocktails later, I felt comfortable broaching the subject again. To discover that everyone is calling denim skirts for spring/summer.
How had one of the staples of my high school closet, a garment basically banned from existence since the early aughts reappear as the “must have” of the season? Well, ladies, everything that was old is new again, and I hope that (if you have daughters) you didn’t purge your closets with the same reckless abandon I did.
Here’s how to wear this style as a grown adult, with a job and a collapsing metabolism.

The Skirt // Hello, old, friend. If you’re going to indulge in this new/old trend, I would recommend picking a skirt with a slit. That tiny amount of breeze will be life saving. I would also recommend doing a lighter, more casual wash.
For this outfit, I chose a classic Levi’s skirt that miraculously costs <$50. If you want a slightly higher rise skirt, this one from Express can help. Plus-size? Land’s End has a great skirt in three washes in sizes 16-24.
The Shirt // How about a red-and-white stripe for summer? This Pomander Place oversized boyfriend shirt looks great worn with the knotted front, but gives you enough material to keep it blousey. Want to get the perfect knot front? Jean Wang and She Style both have great tutorials on getting the styling right.
Need a less oversized shirt? Reformation and Universal Standard both have cute options. However, I will warn you away from a wider stripe in red. It gives fast-food cashier.
The Shoes // I love a wider strap slide for summer. It’s such an easy shoe to throw on with other pieces. This pair from Seychelles is a fantastic option. Everlane also has a great cross-strap for sale. Also, if your sandals tend to rub blisters onto your toes, try this anti chafe spray.
The Accessories // The bag is a simple, but completely functional, Madewell tote. I also considered this Anthro bag that has a more folded, fashion forward shape. It’s a tote with something extra. Need an organizer to give the bag some shape? Try Amazon. I also chose a Madewell belt, something classic.
For the jewelry, I love this Mejuri domed bangle. It’s great on its own or layered with textured chains. The earrings are from Ana Luisa and are the perfect summer wedding earring. Throw on a pair of Ray-Ban tortoise sunnies to complete the look.
So how do you feel about the denim maxi? Yay, nay? Need a moment to recover?

I don’t see a link to the belt, do you have that available? Thank you!
Can you link the belt? Thanks!
Thanks for flagging. https://shopstyle.it/l/cqSTv
As a curvy 5’2″ – that skirt is not for me! But, I LOVE the look on those that can pull it off!
I am intrigued and yes, need a moment to recover, but curious how you’d style this wash for other seasons. Can you share a post on suggestions to make this more of a closet workhorse?
OMG I did the Evereve style box last summer and they sent me a maxi denim skirt! From AG and it was stupid expensive. I had NO IDEA those were a thing again and also looked atrocious on me (too bottom curvy) but this is a FANTASTIC look. I sent it to a friend just now who I know can wear it beautifully!
