Ask the Editor: Root Touch Up Tips

May 29, 2024

As we age, we deal with the changes in different ways. Maybe we accept them and move on. Maybe we try to lessen or conceal them. Maybe we fight back like a UFC fighter. That’s why there are many ways to deal with graying hair.

Abra,

Recently, I crossed a line between a few gray hairs and a lot of gray hairs.  I color my hair but don’t know what to do in between appointments.  What do you do?

Serena

I started going gray at 30.  At 42, the gray is significant.  And while I am fine with the light sagging of my neck, the lack of firmness in my jaw line, and the wrinkles on my forehead, I cannot abide going gray.  I’m just not ready, and frankly, it’s up to every woman to decide when and how she’s ready to make that change for herself.

My hairdresser touches up my roots every 5-weeks.  Four is not enough to make it worth the $150.  Six is too long, and I wind up with a stripe down my scalp.

In between appointments, I keep the color looking fresh with dpHue gloss in medium brown.  It just freshens up the ends, which lose their luster over time.  It’s also a pretty good conditioner.

If my roots are looking especially visible, I touch them up with a $12 root spray from L’Oreal.  It’s effective and doesn’t make my scalp itch.  Pro tip: Hit it with a blow dryer on cool to lock in the color so you don’t wind up with it on your clothes or fingers. When I travel, I pack the touch-up pen.  It doesn’t work quite as well, but it will do in a pinch.

In an I saw it on Tik-Tok moment, I purcahsed and have been using the Boldify Hairline Powder (available on Amazon). I like the applicator better than some of the other powder products that I have tried, the product is long lasting, and it doesn’t make my scalp itch. I have been coloring my hair since I was in my 20s (I’m in my 40s now). While I visit my colorist every four weeks, I still need something to get me through the second two weeks. Not sure if it matters, but I have thick, rather coarse hair that I straighten. I am a once-a-week hairwasher so any of these products last a long time for me. I do work out daily and I have found that I don’t have to touch up the Boldify powder much — even after a sweaty workout (granted, I wear a thick headband and take great pains to not have to wash my hair more than once a week).

Oribe Airbrush Root Touch-up Spray – this stuff is like GOLD.

Second the L’Oreal root touch up spray. Cheap and easy to find in any drugstore. Works great.

I use eyebrow stamp sticks to cover my roots! I use one from Tarte but there are a lot of affordable options on Amazon. My favorite part is that it doesn’t run when I sweat and even lasts through a couple showers.
