The Range: Spring Outerwear

Mar 11, 2024

Yesterday, I went out for a walk and got caught in a rainstorm. The weather changes just that quick this time of year. I leave the house in the morning and I can see my breath, run an errand in the afternoon and I’m sweating walking to the car. In spring, choosing the right outerwear is important. Plus, a great jacket really finishes an outfit. So let’s go shopping.

Let’s start with waterproof coats.  Because after 10 years in the Pacific Northwest, I’m tired of being randomly soaked in surprise showers.  I like the look of this Lole Rain Jacket that comes in eight colors.  For something more professional looking, this Save the Duck jacket has a very classic look.  If you’re looking for something in the middle, this pale blue San Edelman jacket is fabulous.  Plus-size? This water-resistant coat from Nordstrom is a good choice.

I love a trench coat.  It sounds strange to say, but when I put on a trench, I feel like myself.  This style just connects to something in my soul.

This oversize thyme-colored trench from BR Factory is sublime.  It’s also well priced at $115, and comes in petites.  For more non-khaki trenches, this burgundy coat from Everlane is breathtaking.  This slate blue trench from Mango is incredible — I own a trench in this color and its surprisingly versatile.  And for an affordable gem, this mauve trench from Kohl’s is really lovely.

Utility jackets are still in style, but the look has changed slightly.  The pockets are bigger.  The look is more masculine.  This Good American jacket is a good example.  This Banana Republic jacket in black is another excellent choice.  For a more modern, cropped style, this Madewell jacket is the choice.

No, this is not an early April Fools gag.  I spotted these quilted “cottage core” jackets last fall, and I love them.  These are not words that I ever thought I would say, but they add a whimsy to outfits.  If you can find a cool one, a quilted, embroidered jacket is a good way to inject a trend piece in your wardrobe.

This Zara jacket with a slightly ikat print is my favorite.  I bought it immediately.  Amazon has several affordable options.  Free People also has some cute options.

So what outerwear are you looking for for spring?  Leave your thoughts in the comments.

Could you recommend a trench coat with a hood? I love the unique colors of the ones you mentioned, but need a hood for those extra-rainy days.

Can you talk about styling the quilted jackets in a way that reads “cool/casual/stylish” instead of “grandma” ? Love the patterns and they fill a wardrobe niche for me- just not confident in how to wear them!

Trench coats on shorties. Yay or nay?

Excuse me, what in the Vera Bradley is that quilted jacket. (This is me hating it now and probably getting one by fall. The 03 offering on Amazon is pretty cute.)

Looking for rainboots, I know Hunter is a favorite but wondering what alternatives are out there.

My dark under eye circles have been the bane of my existence since I was 12. Is the cause lack of sleep? Dehydration? Sinus issues? Stress? Who the hell knows. But there they are, every day, telling the world that I am an exhausted working Mom.

Sloane loves the pool. She jumps from the deck into the water with a crash, never considering her own safety, only to emerge on the surface, shouting “Again!” The pool is my daughter’s happy place. But no place where I need to wear a swimsuit in public is a happy one for me.

The Mondays: July 22, 2024

The Crowdstrike/Microsoft Meltdown forced me to take a few days off this weekend. No laptop. No billable hours. So we packed Sloane up for a visit to a local llama farm, stopped by the pool, went for coffee, etc. Few things are as funny as watching a 23-month old feed carrots to a ravenous rescue […]
