Two Ways: Styling a Striped Shirt

Feb 8, 2024

Striped shirts are a great piece for seasonal transitions. They’re classic, easy to wear and can be styled in any number of ways. Here are two outfits for WFH and a professional office.

The Shirt // You can find the striped shirt in this morning’s Find post. The wide stripe is a great option.

Work From Home // A bright yellow sweater is the perfect complement to the striped shirt. This one from J.Crew has a chartreuse hue, and that gives it a little something extra. If you typically buy neutral sweaters, you may want to try a brighter color. You may be surprised how often you reach for it. I recently purchased this oversized sweater, and I really like the punch of color on these gray winter days.

The jeans for this outfit are actually chambray, so they wear more like pajama pants. They come from LL Bean, and they’re a great option for summer since they’re also lightweight. So if you want the comfort of sweats with the look of jeans, these are for you. Also, they come in petite, plus, tall, and medium tall size ranges.

For the remainder of the outfit, I chose these simple hoop earrings from Ana Luisa. The oblong shape is a cool look, and the size is a nice medium length. I also went with a simple, open back shearling slipper from Quince.

To style this, wear your hair however you like, but if you pop the collar (which I do), wear it up for max impact. Because this is a brighter style, you want a neutral cheek (not too much pink or coral) and a brighter lip, red works best.

Professional Office // I chose this business suit so you could see how good the stripes look with a teal suit. The darker, richer teal is fab. Also, this suit is deeply discounted, and to get a Paul Smith suit for under-$500 is a bit of a deal. They have several other suits on sale as well, including a nice lilac and a coral-pink.

As for other colors, a pale blue would be chic too. Navy is also an option, but it’s not quite as punchy. And, in the warmer months, ivory or white would be a nice look.

Beyond the suit, I chose these teal heels to blend in and give the legs a nice long look. If you don’t want a uni-tasking pair of shoes, I recommend gray or snakeskin, but black also works if it’s what you have at the ready. The bag is an easy satchel bag with matching storage pouch — I always like a bag without a lot of logo-hardware. And the earrings are a really cool huggie hoop from Missoma.

For the makeup, a berry lip and purple or mauve eyeshadow works with the teal. The hair is a little severe worn up, but down softens the suit.

very fun and springy — and awesome price on those l.l. bean chambray pants. I think I would grab them all the time for my casual non-profit job!

Just bought those LL Bean pants. In general when not with a sweater, would you style shirts tucked, untucked, are we still French tucking? I never really know what to do with an elastic waistband ruched….
    Thanks!
