Friday Finds: Sale Picks

Jan 12, 2024

It’s easy to get bombarded with sales this time of year.  I ask myself two questions when shopping sales: 1) would I buy this item at full price, and 2) do I already own this in another form?  If the answer to the first question is no, then we’re done.  If the answer to the second question is yes, I ask myself if this one is different in a way that adds value to my wardrobe.

For example, if I already own a black work pant, but this one is a different style.  Or perhaps, my go-to black pants are getting worn a bit too much, and I need another pair to share the burden.

This week, I went sale shopping for a more relaxed, WFH friendly black pant.  I also swiped through a few more sales to see if anything I wanted at full freight was marked down.  Here are the pieces that I found.

My friend refers to these Everlane City Stripe Pants as her Disco pants because of the wide style and the stripes woven into the fabric.  She wears them to her no-jeans/no athleisure office when she wants to be comfortable. They’re currently on sale for $44, but they are final sale.  To minimize issues, I sized up and will have the waist taken in to fit.

This year, I’ve lost my patience with influencers who act like this Shopbop sale is the last sale the retailer will ever have.  But this is the sale that I scroll through hunting for answers to question one: the pieces I would have purchased at full price.

I’ve had my eye on a sun visor for the pool.  Straw hats blow away, and baseball caps are too sporty.  And this Freya visor is perfect for me, and with the extra 25% off, a price I am willing to pay for a pool accessory.  Also, in this sale, a lot of great shoes.  I had a long talk with myself about these Alexandre Birman shoes for summer weddings.

Nordstrom is having a big end-of-season sale.  These rainbow wellies for Sloane caught my eye immediately.  I also like these milk and cookies pajamas.

As for my picks, my favorite underwire bra is in the sale.  I also loved this block heel slingback if you’re in the office.  I also own this Treasure & Bond cardigan, and when I saw it in the sale, snapped up another color.  And for all my Reiss fans, they have a surprising number of workwear items in this sale.

Reminder that the top of your head can get sun exposure when you wear a visor instead of a full hat. I have a visor too because a visor is sometimes the best answer for a day, but keep the top-of-head sun exposure in mind as well.

I really need to replace my office sweater with an open cardigan, prefer cashmere and heavier/thicker is better. I know Abra can’t wear wool, but have you (or does anyone on the thread) have any advice on the relative merits of Saks and Bloomingdale’s and Neiman’s in-house lines vs. Quince vs. anything else?

Oooooh I’m gonna have to have a long talk with myself about that visor! 🩷

Just throwing this out there, I’ve been finding some cute, comfortable affordable stuff at J. Jill lately. Never looked at them before. It does skew a little “older” but the sizing makes sense for me (yay talls!) and they have a lot of seasonal sales.

PSA that cute rain boots in a size a couple larger than what the child is currently wearing can be an awesome useful gift for a kid that seems to have everything. My daughter loves wearing boots.

Shoe Week: One Last Summer Shoe

It’s been a fun week talking about shoes. A former co-worker texted me yesterday and asked what shoe I would buy, if I were only going to buy one shoe for summer. And, of course, I told her that I have two suggestions. Her response: “Typical.”

Shoe Week: A High Heel Alternative

Next month, I’m spending a week in Salt Lake for work. My ability to wear high heels went out with the pandemic, so what am I putting on my feet? These.
