2013 Outfit Restyle: Bring the Tweed

Oct 2, 2023

The theme of 2013 was more is more. Wearing a bracelet? Wear five. Add a belt. Add a necklace, maybe two . . . make it three. So when I look at outfits from a decade ago, my first instinct is always: do less.

And this week’s outfit restyle is no exception.  The vibe is cute, but it’s heavy.  So let’s lighten it up, simplify a bit (or a lot) and bring it into the now with some new pieces.

The Jacket // The hero piece, a tweed jacket is a wardrobe staple and an utter classic.  Wear it to work.  Wear it for weekend.  Feel all those faux-Chanel vibes.  For this look, I chose the epitome of cool-girl chic, an Iro Silgo open-front jacket.  A bit of a splurge, but one you can wear for years to come.

Prefer a lower price point?  I really like this Abercrombie jacket.  Also, Anthropologie has a lot of tweed jackets.  I love this Maeve option for under-$100.  This Walter Baker number is sublime.  Need a plus-size option?  Amazon’s Drop line has one.

The T-Shirt // I love a square-neck or scoop-neck top.  Almost universally flattering, this look gives you the same open styling as a v-neck with slightly more sex appeal.  It’s also perfect for wearing with jackets because the tee’s neckline never competes with the jacket’s neckline, whether it’s a blazer or collarless look.

This one from Old Navy is an absolute steal at $16 (also in petite, plus and tall).  Madewell also makes a fantastic scoop neck style.  Also, the best t-shirt I own is a maternity top.  Just trust me on this — pregnant, not pregnant it’s amazing.

Jeans // The inspiration photo has a distressed boyfriend jean, which is a great look.  But for 2023, I have another option.

I just bought these Leenah Raw Hem Jeans from Paige and I am in love.  Love.  An ankle-length wide leg style they are the perfect casual, fall jean.  Plus, they are so soft and comfortable.  Runs a little small thanks to the high waist, so size up if you’re in between sizes.  Need an option for under-$100?  This Kut from the Kloth jean is a very similar look.  Plus-size?  Try this Hepburn high-waist jean with a raw hem.

Shoes & Bag // Mary Janes are having a moment.  Every blogger I know seems to own these Madewell ballet Marys.  And I’m thisclose to pulling the trigger myself.

And while I love an oversize clutch, this bucket-bag Transport tote (also from Madewell) is the way to go if you need more storage than a clutch provides.  I’ve been thinking about buying a resale Celine Seau Sangle bag for a minute, and this is a great alternative.

Jewelry // Obviously the inspiration look goes heavy on the jewelry.  For me, I just want one piece.  Maybe it’s a chunky watch.  Vintage preferably (check the watch case next time you’re at an antique or thrift shop).  But a bracelet is the way I would go, and this Missoma Axiom bracelet is the best.  I love that it mixes two sizes of chain link to make a very unique and cool bracelet that can be fancy or casual depending on the look.

Makeup // To me, this outfit just cries out for a red polish.  This Emilie Heathe polish is vegan, ten-free and nourishes nails.  I haven’t had a chance to try it myself, but a friend swears by it for her brittle nails.  For me, the go-to is always OPI “I’m not Really a Waitress” red.

The old navy link is going to the Amazon Jacket link, just fyi! And I just bought a pair of “stovepipe” light wash jeans from BR and was surprised how much I liked the looser, more modern style.

Yay for being back – missed CHS! I love this look; never got into tweed jackets in the 2010s but you may have just convinced me to pull the trigger on a tweed jacket that’s sitting in my TJMaxx cart.

Add to Cart: Five Recent Amazon Purchases

Since my daughter was born, Amazon has claimed so much of my money that I had to buy stock just to get some of it back.  Between the formula, onesies, fruit pouches, diapers, wipes, and ever evolving list of baby development gear, I could not survive without Prime.   My husband no longer notices the […]
