Ask the Editor: Dresses for Conferences

Jul 24, 2023

The world has reopened.  Need proof?  Conferences abound this summer, filling three-star hotels in exciting locales like Cleveland, Atlanta, and Portland with lanyard wearing attendees.  But what does one wear to a conference in a post-COVID world?

Hello Abra,

My employer works as a vendor in the political fundraising space.  As you might guess, this means that I attend a lot of conferences and conventions.  My daytime attire is chosen for me by the company (dark suit).  My dinner attire is another matter.  Can you help me find some dresses that can have cheap wine spilled on them before being shoved in a carry-on?

Best, Amy

When you need an affordable dress that looks great, wears well, and that you can destroy without guilt, look no further than Nordstrom Rack.  Their discounted fashions are perfect for looking the part on a budget.  Here are a few that caught my eye.

Twist Front Long Sleeve Dress

Tie Neck Short Sleeve Dress

Short Sleeve Fit and Flare Dress

Bodycon Flutter Sleeve Dress

It’s been a fun week talking about shoes. A former co-worker texted me yesterday and asked what shoe I would buy, if I were only going to buy one shoe for summer. And, of course, I told her that I have two suggestions. Her response: “Typical.”

Shoe Week: A High Heel Alternative

Next month, I’m spending a week in Salt Lake for work. My ability to wear high heels went out with the pandemic, so what am I putting on my feet? These.
