The Range: Office Shoes for Summer

May 9, 2023

This week is my first week home from the legislative session in Montana.  I feel like a caged greyhound.  So much frenetic energy and I need to find somewhere to put it, so I have been mucking out closets and cabinets.

I started with the fridge and the pantry.  Then, I hit the cupboards in the kitchen.  Then, the laundry room and the guest bath.  And today, I’m going to dive into my closet.  So this is a good time to be thinking about rebuilding a work wardrobe that doesn’t serve me as well as it once did.  And one of the things I need are summer shoes that are professional enough for work.  Here are some suggestions, all under-$125.

I love a pointed flat for the office, and this D’orsay Flat from Nine West is a great option.  The shoe comes in black or tan, sizes 5-12, and it comes in W width.  I love the slight bit of lightness from the open side, but still perfectly appropriate for even a stodgy office.

The textured pattern on these snakeskin heels from Lauren by Ralph Lauren is fabulous.  It’s the perfect mix of light and dark for pairing with summer dresses or winter pieces.

Unisa makes chic, basic shoes.  These open-toe wedges give you a little height with more stability than a pump.  They also come in tortoise and silver metallic.

If you wear navy suits (aka summer-black) to work, then you need a pair of navy pumps.  These Antonio Melani heels are a great option.  They’re a comfortable medium height and will really complete your look.

I bought these cork flats from Ann Taylor for a light, summer shoe that I could wear to the office.  I really like them with dresses; they also work with white denim.

Your post a few weeks ago about no longer being willing to sacrifice comfort really resonated with me. How are these for comfort? I’m on the hunt for work shoes that don’t feel like they’re made of cardboard on the bottom. I loved my Rothy’s at first, but they feel so, so thin! Don’t even try to walk on grabel wearing them. I’m eyeing a pair of Sam Edelman Lorraine bit loafers; any other suggestions?

Target used to have some great sandals from universal thread. They had a heel, which I thought made them feel a little better fit for an everyday shoe in an office that’s a bit more casual in the summertime. After around 5 years, my sandals – and the backup replacement pairs I got – are done. It seems like sandals with a heel are out of style this season. Have you seen any anywhere that have caught your eye? I’ve been thinking about the Niccolo Huaraches as a replacement after seeing them on social media (and then having the ads haunt me on social media after checking them out).

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
