The Best: Six Gift Ideas for Mother’s Day

May 4, 2023

When I was little, I loved giving my Mom Mother’s Day Gifts.  Handmade cards, school projects, and rose bushes from the Kmart Garden Center.  Now that I’m a Mom, I really don’t need a gift.  (I just need Sloane to sleep through the night.????)  But it is still nice to buy Mom something to show you appreciate her.

A Summer Bag // This Caterina Bertini tote bag is a wonderful mix of work and weekend.  I put it on the blog a couple of days ago and haven’t been able to stop thinking about it.  Can confirm it will hold a small laptop turned on its side.  For something under-$100, I like this black leather-trimmed raffia tote from TJ Maxx.

If your Mom is in need of a bag for poolside or beach time, this Bembien Large Tote has a breezier, but still classic, feel.  I also like this Italist tote with a crossbody strap.  Prefer a clutch?  This very affordable cork one has a bamboo handle.

Sentimental Jewelry // When Sloane was born, I wanted to buy a piece of jewelry with her name or initial on it, but everything felt too cutesy, or the quality was trash, or I’d buy it and never wear it.  My first thought was to buy this Monica Vinader Signet Ring (because chunky rings are having a moment), but I wear so few rings these days, it wasn’t the right choice.  I’m currently debating between this inline Maya Brenner initial necklace (I like the subtlety) and this not-too-cute Charli locket necklace from Sarah & Chloe (I love the longer chain).

A Gorgeous Bouquet // If your Mom loves flowers, the Internet abounds with chic choices.  Terrain has this incredible ranunculus bouquet and several other unique and breathtaking choices.  If you prefer something more traditional, this white O’Hara Bouquet caught my eye.  Or if you like a plant that lives on, I love my Calamodin Orange Tree from Via Citrus.

The Good Hand Soap // You know, the soap your Mom puts in the guest bathroom or the kitchen so visitors think you’re fancy?  This Aesop Resurrection Hand Soap and Hand Balm is a great product that smells amazing with hints of citrus and rosemary.  Plus, of your Mom is thrifty, she can just refill the bottle with this Mrs. Meyer’s Hand Soap when it’s done.

An Electronic Photo Frame // Have a grandparent or parent who loves photos but is bad with technology?  An Aura Photo Frame lets you drop in new pictures via wi-fi so you can share photos of loved ones easily.  This metal mesh frame style is also nice.  Or if your Mom loves a printed photo, I would buy her this Kodak printer and order an Artifact Uprising photo book with extra pages she can fill as she prints off new pics.

A Great Gadget // Why should Dads get all the cool toys for Father’s Day?  If you have a Mom who loves to travel, this AirFly device lets her use her AirPods or Bluetooth headset with a plane’s inflight video system.  (It’s a nice gift for a new grad who might be flying back and forth from college as well.)  Other Mom gifts I can recommend are these sanity-saving Bose headphones and this NuFace wrinkle treatment device for all the laugh and frown lines you’ve given her over the years.

I haven’t tried it yet, but I’m very interested in the Element Brooklyn dupe refills for Aesop Resurrection hand soap. I used to buy Mrs. Meyer’s and still have a stash to use up, but after trying the Aesop, it really is a next level in luxury, in both scent and texture.

On the name jewelry, my mom got me a thin gold cuff with my son’s name, birthday, and measurements on the inside of the bracelet & it’s become my favorite jewelry item. I like that it is sentimental & personal, but is in no way cutesy or gives obvious information about my son to strangers

I love my Maya Brenner initial necklace – it’s held up through 5 years of never taking it off to shower, workout, swim, etc. It’s great for layering and I like that it’s very subtle but still visible. That said, I know so many women who have them that, if I were choosing again today, I’d probably get something else.

I second the Bose headphones as a wonderful gift. I’ve owned a bit older version for years, and I use them everyday. Love them!!

Belle, do you have this particular NuFace device? Can anyone speak on behalf of the NuFace Trinity or the Trinity+? I’ve been saving Ulta points, and I’m thinking of buying one, but I’m a little confused on which one would be better.

+1 on Bose Noise Canceling headphones. I don’t own a pair of the 700 series, but I do have the QuietComfort 35-IIs and they are SO good. They’re comfortable, packable, and amazing. When my former employer had us RTO after a year of WFH (which I favor) AND we consolidated locations, causing me to lose my office and go back to a cube, I NEEDED them. Focus work in an open concept does not work.

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
