The Essentials: Blazers for Basic Pieces

Feb 1, 2023

A strong work wardrobe filled with basic separates — blouses, pants and skirts in black, navy and ivory.  But how do you keep basics from becoming humdrum?  You pair them with cool blazers.  Here are four styles that caught my eye.

A Modern Plaid Blazer gives you serious Sherlock Holmes vibes without being stodgy.  This Avec Les Filles topper comes in several colorways.  This chic brown option would look great over ivory or navy separates.  I also like this grey option from English Factory.  Plus-size readers should have a look at this Bar III blazer.  And this windowpane Nic + Zoe blazer comes in misses and petite.

A Cool Tweed Blazer like this Khloe one from Cinq a Sept is a great addition to any wardrobe.  I love the slate color and the thick, nubby tweed looks very chic.  And the pushed up sleeve keeps it from being too staid. The Khloe is a little spendy, but I’ve gotten a ton of wear out of mine with black separates and jeans.

When searching for a tweed jacket, try to find one that doesn’t give off Grandma Goes to Church vibes.  This schoolboy-style blazer with red trim is pretty cool.  I also like this ivory tweed blazer from Nordy’s and this slightly cropped green one from Ann Taylor.  Plus-size?  Try this Chanel-inspired jacket in red.

A Belted Blazer can look like a bathrobe if you’re not careful (avoid floppy belts, white hues, and jackets without structure).  But this one from Endless Rose is tailored beautifully and the wine color is sublime.  It would be incredible over grey separates or a wine-colored cami and distressed denim.

Looking for neutrals? Le Suit makes a business suit with a belted navy jacket (also in plus).  And if you’re size medium do not miss this Proenza Schouler option from The Outnet.

Hooded Blazers were a big trend a few years back, and thanks to the post-COVID, casual world we live in, they’re coming back.  One of my friends wears their’s with wide leg trousers and a graphic tee for work days in a business casual office.  Or just pair it with jeans, or wear it over a sweater dress to add a casual flare.

Veronica Beard makes the top of the line blazer and removable hoodie option.  You can also choose a more affordable option from Liverpool Los Angeles or Blue Revival.

    Love the belted one!

Loooove these. Especially the hooded one. I get that it doesn’t work in lots of work environments, but does for mine! Fully remote tech startup, I go to a coworking space dedicated to health-tech. Belted one is also gorgeous.

Ugh, I’m such a sucker for the Khloe blazers. They just look so good every time I grab one. My poor wallet.

Thank you for this! This is exactly what I needed. I was at a meeting in DC last week feeling very unstylish (quite pregnant + in pre-pandemic office attire), and it made me very excited for the post-partum wardrobe refresh! That Khloe blazer in particular is amazing.

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
