Monday Outfit: Mixing Black and Brown

Jan 9, 2023

Fashion has so many “rules.” No white after Labor Day. Don’t mix stripes and plaids.  Then, there’s all the colors that you supposedly can’t mix with black.  No navy and black.  No brown and black.  I am just not here for that shade.

Okay, maybe the stripes and plaids part, but not the rest of it.

This outfit mixes brown and black in a way that feels effortless and chic.  It’s the kind of outfit that you toss on without a thought and it looks pulled together.

Coat // Popping into Zara for a bit of lunchtime shopping is one of the things I miss most about living in D.C.  And this coat in all of its warm chesnut glory is the truth.  If you want something with a little more structure, try this Athleta trench coat or this Lagerfeld wrap coat.

Pants // Post-COVID, work pants are now being made in relaxed, athleisure fabrics.  These Athleta pants give you everything you need to be comfortable and professional at the office.  Old Navy also makes a nice straight leg trouser, which also comes in plus-size. Or go for this pull-on style from Zappos.

Sweater // This J.Crew crewneck sweater has been updated with a slightly deeper neckline.  It’s just a slightly more modern take on a classic. Also in plus.

Shoes // Ladies, meet the star of the show.  These Linea Paolo Niche flats are stunning.  Stunning.  Just look at those cool studded toe caps.

Linea Paolo been one of my favorite brands for years, and with styles like this, it’ll stay that way.  Oh, and don’t miss their Nora flat.

Bag // This is the second time I’ve posted this Kurt Geiger hobo bag.  I am going to keep posting it until it sells out.  Because I love it that much.  It’s just all kinds of slouchy, casual goodness.

Accessories // Finish off this look with a pair of dagger earrings from Missoma and a pair of round, all-black sunglasses from Amazon.  (These sunnies are just so fabulous. They have an attitude all their own.)

Styling // This look benefits from shiny hair.  I know that may sounds strange, but when you’re wearing a simple outfit, shiny, healthy hair is a must.  It just says, I take care of myself.  So grab yourself some shine serum.  As for the makeup, this is the no makeup, easy look that just feels effortless.

    Gorgeous picks as always!

I have that Zara coat in the oatmeal color and it is fabulous. It’s sophisticated and comfortable, and always gets compliments. A word of caution to the cold-climate ladies: the coat’s material is fairly thin and it’s not lined, so it won’t provide much in the way of warmth. If you think you’ll need a heavier layer beneath you might consider sizing up (I’m a size ~6 and a medium works for me if I wear a very light sleeve or sleeveless under layer, but for anything thicker underneath I’d want more arm room). It’s perfect for LA “winter” temps though!

It’s allegedly spring. However, for every minute of sunshine, there seems to be an hour of rain and gloom. So while I’d love to wear lighter spring pieces, it’s time to bring on the layers.

The Range: Spring Blouses for Work (or Zoom)

Since Sloane was born, I’ve fallen hard into a black, white, and blue wardrobe. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but as spring blooms, I need a little color in my wardrobe (and probably a little print too). Here are a few tops that caught my eye for work.
