Ask the Editor: Gift Guides Vol. I

Dec 8, 2022

Every year, I love pulling together gift guides.  But this year, I’m not feeling the holiday spirit.  So I asked Thirtyish’s Facebook followers and newsletter readers to submit their gifting needs for some personalized help.  Here are the first batch of queries.

Food gifts. My grandparents don’t want presents, but like snacks and treats.

The best gifts are tilted to a personal likes and needs, nowhere is this more true than with food.  But let me suggest a couple of shops to peruse.

Terrain has a lot of good gifts for foodies.  They specialize in condiments and cocktail extras.  For your holiday cocoa, try this snowflake-shaped marshmallows.

Food52 also has incredible gifts.  This Salty Speculoos spread would be fantastic on toast.  Also, these Sicilian jams are sublime.

Lastly, May I suggest Goldbelly?  You can order the best regional delicacies from across the country.  I may order a Tom Cruise Coconut Cake for our celebrations.

Gifts for Dads who don’t drink, golf, grill or eat spicy food.

Do such men exist?  It would appear so, even though I don’t think the people who write most of the gift guides have ever met such a man.  But of the Gift Guides I’ve seen this season The Strategist has the most unique suggestions for Dads.

As for my suggestions: 1) a Megaboom Bluetooth speaker (The sound quality is really good and our friend’s has survived being dropped in a lake and dropped from a third story window.);  2) a pair of cashmere-lined leather gloves; 3) personalized photos of loved ones from Minted.

For a splurge gift, what about an outdoor pizza oven?  My husband loves his.

Boujie friend that has everything and I’m on a budget!

As Taylor Swift says, “It’s me. I’m the problem.”  As the friend who doesn’t need anything, but still likes a thoughtful gift, I have a few suggestions.

Dior’s Creme Abricot cuticle cream.  It’s affordable and awesome.  It also gives you a bit of luxury at a <$30 price.

An oversized wrap/scarf looks great with any attire.  This pleated scarf is also really fab.  Stick to a lighter neutral color like cream or tan, it’s more versatile.

Other options include a coffee table book from Death & Co. filled with delicious cocktail recipes, a pair of glass coffee mugs, or a set of cool candlesticks.

Back to the office commuter edition. Bringing a little home to your in office workspace.

Sprucing up your friend’s desk is a nice gift for the holidays.  My favorite shops for office accessories are Anthropologie and Etsy.  From Anthro, try this Deskpad note pad or this cool, patterned desk organizer.  As for Etsy, I like these small planters, which are the perfect size for succulents.

For food gifts – a friend gifted me a dried fruit sampler from Yun Hai https://yunhai.shop/collections/yun-hai-selection-taiwanese-dried-fruit/products/yun-hai-dried-fruit-sampler and I had to keep myself from devouring it all in one day.

The link to the gloves goes to the speaker, would love the updated one!

For cheeky, but super fun office accessories and drinkware I have become a huge fan of Chez Gagne. I may have even heard of it on here, but I love their wine glasses and notebooks!

Just wanted to get on here and let you know that the ring cleaner that you recommended a few months ago just made it to my wishlist as my number one wish – thanks for sharing your good finds! Merry Christmas to your family!

Universal YUMS is a great snack subscription service for food lovers.

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
